Birding in Cuba during a winter blizzard in Maine, USA has it's positive affects on you especially when you add in the diverse birding experience of Villa Guajimico. Look for the smallest bat in the world, Butterfly bats, foraging at dusk, a colorful and dynamic sunset among the harden coral reefs of the Jurassic past. A spectacular location with excellent ocean mangrove and xeric edge habitat perfect for Warblers and Cuban Vireos. Listen for Cuban Pygmy and Bare-legged Owl.

Maybe my experience was different than others in that I was part of a small Cuban Tour. But I found the rooms to be very nice and clean, well refreshed each morning with pretty bath towel origami, and liked having my own little cabin. It was quiet enough to hear the ocean waves, food was more than adequate and loved the buffet breakfast with custom made omelettes, great mojitos and pina coladas, and courteous but not super friendly staff. The pool is clean and sunny, the caves are the best for photography, the scuba and snorkeling on site is safe and colorful.

Room tip: AC might be a bit loud so just put it on before going to bed. Rooms/cabins that are nearer the pool and bar will be noisier.

Good:
-very beautiful location
-Nice walking (go see the caves with a local guide!)
-Snorkeling/diving on site
-Nice accommodations, especially for Cuba
-Nice staff (mostly... see warning below)

Warning:
We traveled with a group and several of us were tricked either by staff at the bar or by housekeeping staff.
1] Shoes were stolen by housekeeping, but returned after a complaint was made.
2] A group member was accused of stealing a towel by housekeeping: he emptied out his whole suitcase to show this was not true: he still had to pay.
3] at least two of us (I was one of those) were charged too much (about 2 Euro/cuc) getting drinks at the bar.

It's a lovely place; but stay alert!

I just spent a great few days with a bunch of nice french people at Villa Guajimico, at an ucpa (ucpa.com) week.

Villa Guajimico is quiet location approx 40 km from Trinidad and Cienfuegos. Excellent for larger groups, (families, bikers, divers) great sea water pool, bar and restaurant.
Local village restaurant is a 5 minute walk away, with excellent food.

As in most places Spanish is very very handy to communicate and make arrangements.

I stayed at Guajimico Campimso for one night. The area is amazingly beautiful with limstone cliffs and a tranquil bay which was excellent for snorkling. The whole area was surrounded by natural beauty but unfortunately my experience of the hotel it's self was terrible. The price of the rooms had doubled in a year to 40cuc a night which isn't too expensive but the standards was half that of any casa particular I stayed in. The walls were full of mold from the humidity and hadn't been painted in years, my light didn't work and I called reception and no one came to fix it. There was a boiler in the room for the hot water which ran all night which kept me awake and drowned out the peacefulness of the nature. The pool was filty and was sea water. The worst was the food, it was expensive and the worst by far I had in Cuba, 6cuc for a sandwich no butter or mayo just a bit of fish between to try slices of bread. The dinner Buffett was ok it was 12cuc but what they didn't inform me was that soft drinks were not included. It was 4cuc for a small glass pinapple juice which was more froth than juice and 1.50 for a small water. As the campimso was in the middle of nowhere I had limited cash on me and no access to a bank machine so I needed to watch my cash until I got to Trindad. When I spoke to the resturant manager Raymando and stated it was expensive for a small glass of pinapple juice and that I should have been told soft drinks were not included he became quite aggressive with me demanding I pay the money now. At this stage two other male members of staff came over and surrounds me demanding I pay the money now. As a woman travelling alone I felt very intimated by the tree males around and the agression of the resturant manager Raymondo towards me for complaining. The were not willing to listen that I found the service unsatisfactory. I payed the bill and left as I felt unsafe. It was by far the worst experience I had in customer relations in Cuba.
