If you are travelling to or from Yellowstone and Billings as a destination then this route is a must. We were travelling up from Cody to Billings and somebody suggested we take the route via the Chief Joseph Highway which then connects with the Beartooth Highway. We are so glad we did. Both routes have spectacular scenery and the climb up to over 10,900ft just gets better and better. Even at the end of May there was plenty of snow around but all the roads were clear. This is the route that also takes you through to the north east entrance to Yellowstone.

This is one of the most breathtaking Highway to drive, so beautiful, even in middle September when it can already be cold, windy and stormy with little bit of snow.
Can not imagine how it must even look during summer time.
It was so worth it to take the extra miles to drive from Yellowstone to Cokie City over the Beartooth Pass to Cody.
Withouten adoubt would do it again!

We drove from Cooke City to Red Lodge in sunshine although the weather closed in and the pass was closed the following day. So check the forecasts and do it when you can! The scenery was stunning and there are plenty of pullouts so that you can take lots of photos.

I read about this road and found videos of it taken on GoPros on YouTube, and I can tell you that nothing really prepares you for how spectacular it is in person. The late Charles Kuralt from CBS labeled it as the most beautiful road in America and I'd have to agree although I've been on others as spectacular but not nearly as long. It's not really terror-inducing but you will definitely be motivated to pay attention. At several of the scenic turnouts you can look up and see one of the upcoming switchbacks far above you and wonder "can that really be the road?" Very memorable, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. You'll want to check the weather before you try it because the top is a few feet short of 11,000, and it can be a lot different up there.

It's so great!! I want to ride it again!
We rode motorcycles from Red Lodge to Cooke City. I wished we had time to ride back to Red Lodge so at least I could see everything from the other direction! Not kidding on how hell-roaring windy it is at the upper elevations, but it's so beautiful. AND thankfully not much traffic (like Going to the Sun road.)
Make sure you stop for gorgeous photos at Rock Creek Vista, Gardner Lake overlook, the summit and Pilot & Index Peak overlook. No other people stopped in those places when we were there on a September Thursday late morning!
After lunch in Cooke City, we continued on toward Mammoth Hot Springs inside Yellowstone. Simply amazing views of thousands of bison throughout Lamar Valley. People told us the bison stopped traffic earlier that morning, so beware.
