I have gone to El Gallo in Salem on numerous occasions and feel the food and service is top notch. The Beulah/Salem location is very nice on outside and inside. Food is top notch and reasonable prices especially their lunch specials. The Opelika location has good food and service but the exterior is a bit rough. Inside it's a bit different. We'll return.

Excellent Mexican food in the South! Fresh salsa and chips were served. We had the tacos and shrimp quesadilla. All the food was very tasty and fresh. Very reasonably priced and very good attentive service by several different folks there.

The place itself is a little rough looking and no frills- very plain and basic. The food, however, makes up for the lack of ambiance.

This was a nice find for my wife and me a few months ago as we were searching for a restaurant serving authentic Mexican food in the Auburn area. There are a lot of Mexican-style restaurants around here now, but most are a little too bland and/or take American-style shortcuts with ingredients and preparation.

El Gallo is just off Opelika Road near the mall in Auburn but it is hidden behind a Waffle House and next to a now vacant furniture store. That’s just the hole-n-the-wall type place that signals authenticity to me, and the food bears it out. It is also the type place most visitors and football fans miss when they stand in line for service at bigger, more visible places on home-game weekends.

We have been there five or six times over the past three months and tried different foods each time. Our favorites are the fajitas and the chili relenos. The steak and chicken in the fajitas were tender and had a grilled taste, and they had roughly equal amounts of peppers and onions, instead of being mostly onions like at some places. The chili rellenos were the large paploma peppers with large chucks of ground beef in the sauce. And the margaritas also looked and tasted authentic, unlike the dark green ones that came from a prepared mix that some places are using these days.
