The hotel is an older upstairs facility with rooms off of a nice courtyard area. My grandson and I found it to be a very pleasant stay--friendly staff and a clean and attractive room. I would recommend it highly as a budget friendly place in Avalon.

The Hotel Mac Rae was built by my great-grandfather in 1920 so our family is approaching 100 years of business in this hotel. I am glad to hear that our staff was friendly and that your room was clean and attractive. We do try to provide good values so thank you for sharing that you recommend it highly as a budget friendly hotel in Avalon. Come and see us again soon.

The Mac Rae is one of the few hotels lining the beach in Avalon on Catalina Island.

For those who are unfamiliar with Catalina Island, there are two major cities - Avalon, and Two Harbors.

The ferry from Long Beach to Catalina lands in Avalon, which is for the most part, a completely walkable city. The main part of the city is along Crescent Ave, which is right by the ocean.

This means that the Mac Rae is very accessible by foot and is a short walk from the ferry (IMO, about 10 minutes).

We got a room that faced the ocean and the view was amazing. In terms of convenience, this hotel couldn't be beat. When you exit the hotel, you end up right on Crescent Ave where most of the restaurants, bars and shops are.

I do want to note that it's a very quiet hotel. In terms of staff, it's mostly the person sitting at the front desk. It's more BnB than hotel, but that's not really an issue, since you won't be spending too much time in the hotel anyway (there's so much to do in Catalina).

The rooms and the hotel look dated (the rooms could definitely use a cheerier touch of paint instead of the 1920's beige / yellow they are now) but the rooms were definitely very clean and well maintained.

In general, the hotel is a no-frills establishment, but you won't be lacking in any comforts. The rooms / bathrooms / linen were clean and comfortable, and they have coffee and muffins out in the mornings.

They have WiFi but honestly, I didn't use it and wouldn't really expect it to hold up. Catalina in general has spotty 4G / LTE and I would expect WiFi to perform the same way.

The hotel was affordable, by the ocean, and very conveniently located, which was what we were looking for.

One thing I want to note is that the showers were lacking in water pressure, though I think that may be intentional, with the CA drought and water shortage.

As I said before, everything you need is within walking distance (cars are very restricted on the island and almost everyone uses golf carts or bikes).

Here's the time it took us to walk to the different parts from the Mac Rae:
The Casino building - 20 minutes
Bike Rental - 5 minutes
Spa - 7 minutes
Pharmacy / General Store - 3 minutes
Beach - 0 minutes :D

Room Tip: You may hear early ferry passengers clattering their suitcases across the brick road in the ocean facing rooms.

Thank you for your lengthy review. I am sure future travelers will find it helpful. I am pleased that your enjoyed your Ocean View room and that you found it to be very clean and well maintained. I am sorry that you didn't like the Macadamia wall color that our decorator chose to go with the blues and browns in the room. I understand your comments on our Wifi as this has been a struggle for the entire island. We are promised a significant internet connection upgrade for the entire city this June. We are all looking forward to that! Thank you again for your thoughtful review and we look forward to having you as our guest again in the near future.

OK...it goes up during the holidays, but this was an $80.00 room that was jacked up to $150.00 a night. Took a shower in three inches of standing water, internet was poor and the "continental" breakfast was awful coffee and muffins served on a table across from the office. Catalina in general is a giant tourist trap and our stay here was not what one would call memorable.

Avalon offers many things to many people. One can zip line, tour the interior and see our bison from an open jeep or on a hike. You can dive or fish in beautiful clean water, or hit the golf course. Some of our guests just enjoy a peaceful place to read a book. Our beach front rooms never go for $80 and they are higher on holidays and weekends, as you would expect. Muffins and pastries are delivered freshly baked to our hotel every morning and we have good coffee. Our complimentary continental breakfast is not a full sit down meal, by definition. It sounds like Avalon is not a good fit for this guest. Give us a try yourself.

The beds were old and uncomfortable, the staff left at 7pm so if you needed anything you were SOL and it was stupid expensive. I would have only given it one star but the one woman who worked at the front desk was really sweet and helped us get discounted boat tickets. The extra star was for that and for being close to everything.

And we found out November was definitely not the best time to go to Catalina (not the hotels fault) but because of that- everything closes early- so there was not much to do. The hotel offered DVDs to rent, which was nice, but you had to catch them before they left at 7pm. Problem was TV was so small and mounted really high. Normally this would not matter if you are there when things are hopping but if you are wanting to relax in bed before sleeping, it's good to know

Thank you for taking the time to share this review. Our beds are all relatively new so I am sorry that did not they were not the style that you prefer. We do have staff on the property 24 hours a day, but they are on an emergency basis after 7pm. As you noted, winter is a slow time on the island. This winter we did purchase new TVs for all of our hotel rooms. If you research the other Crescent Avenue hotels in Avalon, you will find that our prices are the best value on the beach. There are many wonderful properties to choose from and we hope that you can come back and enjoy Catalina in our summer season to see all that our island has to offer.

Visited Avalon with my wife and two kids (ages 3 & 6). This hotel exemplifies the quaint, small beach town that is the city of Avalon. The Hotel has been there a long time, and appropriately captures the history of the city. Not to mention, the price is great, and the location is perfect. You literally walk out the front of the hotel and onto the beach. If you're looking for fancy & upscale with multiple amenities, this place is not for you; but quite frankly, the historical charm is part of the attraction, and it's nearly impossible to beat the location.
