The lake is beautiful, crystal clear water, with the gorgeous mountains in the backdrop. We come every fall to see the Bells and the changing leaves and this view never disappoints. this hike is really nice and easy. so great for people with younger kids, or older people or people just wanting an easy hike.

"Very Good" only because with the constant changes I could have sat at the end of the lake looking at the lake and the Maroon Bells.
Easy hike. Minor altitude changes. Lots of people.
Note that while the hike is level, the hike is over a thousand feet higher than Aspen.
If you took the bus to the lake, you can hike down and flag the bus and ride down to the Highlands.

We did this hike on Oct. 10 and it was snowing at the top. We should have had mitts and a hat. You had to watch the trail at all times as it was rocky. We are in our early 60s and are fit and found this hike a little challenging. Very uphill all the way but wonderful at the top.

The lake is very close to the parking lot and there is no elevation gain. The lake is gorgeous and the back drop are the Maroon Bells. This is a must see. If you go before 8 you can drive to the trailhead. Otherwise you need to take the bus.

Took the shuttle which I'm not a fan of because I love to stop at the turnoffs and enjoy the scenery. The Bells were gorgeous as we had a light dusting on snow which resulted in the skiffs of snow across the Bells. Awesome.
