Wow this is quite the trail, more like a paved path, from Aspen to Glenwood. 40 some miles of scenic riding. Road bikes might struggle with the gravel portion. Very little shade most of the way. Bring lots of water and snacks. The airport business center has some takeout options (Louis Swiss) and breaks up the ride....and so does El Jebel. Whole Foods there is good.

On a 9 day bike trip with the Bicycle Adventure Club, over 20 of us rode the Rio Grande Trail from Glenwood Springs to Aspen and back with side trips to Redstone, Marble and Basalt. The trail is well maintained, smooth, clean and plenty wide for cycling in either direction. The scenery is spectacular and it is a pleasure not to have to deal with car traffic. The ascent to Aspen is gradual although on a very hot day especially from Basalt to Aspen there is very little shade. Carry plenty of water.

This was the first time I had ever had an opportunity to ride this bike trail from Aspen to Glenwood Springs. The ride is primarily downhill or a very easy grade. If you’re looking for a fantastic bike ride for families, or a great afternoon of exercise then this is the perfect trail! Leave Aspen and make a stop at Woody Creek Tavern, cash only, for a great lunch then continue on to Glenwood Springs. It is very easy to ride the RFTA bus back to Aspen. Fare is $9, $7 fare and a $2 charge for your bike. Enjoy!

We rode bikes on the trail each morning we were in Aspen. It was fairly flat and really scenic. It was the highlight of our morning.

A friend and I walked the trail for about 5 miles 2 wks ago and enjoyed it but you must be careful with all of the bicyclists which there were many. Easy walk with limited altitude gain but pretty scenery to enjoy.
