Review of Independence Pass

Independence Pass

Not for the faint of heart...
Going to Aspen is Bit easier b/c you are actually hugging the mountain. The road is narrow, the views are spectacular and it might be a little...just a little shorter than the interstate. But...
Leaving Aspen, heading down, back to Denver. No guard rails, so straight down you can't see anything but air. But...its the most incredible drive. Wish I'd been in a convertible sports car. What a ride!!
Do Not drive this road, either way at night. And make sure your car is in perfect condition...there is no
Pullover, its sheer mountain or open air. Loved it

Be prepared to keep your eyes peeled to the road while your passengers admire the breathtaking scenery. A true moutain pass, the road narrows at points and you need to make sure you allow room for oncoming traffic. That being said, once you reach the top, you can park, stretch your legs and hike around the path.

There were beautiful spots up and down the pass to stop and take in the scenic trails.

Definitely a great drive. The pass is lovely and cool. The roads on either side are scenic and worth the time to visit and enjoy all the turnouts.

Went over the pass towards Leadville in August 17. Views are lovely, traffic not too bad with chances for passing. At some point the road was so thin I wondered what would happen if someone came from the other direction. It all seemed to work out.

If you think it would be wonderful to walk a tight rope over the grand canyon with your family counting on you to keep them alive then this drive is for you. Yes spectacular views but they literally make you nearly dizzy as you drive bc you are so high up looking over a mountain cliff side you can't enjoy it. My legs were shaking and my body was tense as hell. I had nightmares about this drive the night after. Kept being startled awake by the sensation of falling which is what this two hour drive felt like. Pure hell. Do not do it. We drove up mountain from twin lakes to aspen.
