We stumbled upon this our first night in San Pedro. Great Belizian food. We enjoyed the shrimp coconut curry. Kids both enjoyed their meals.

Everyone we met said try El Fogon and they were right! Had the Tuesday lunch special which was fried chicken. Great food and great service. The frozen coconut margarita was delicious too!

The atmosphere here is rustic. The inside is small and most people eat outside. The eating area has a sand floor with picnic tables and a few tables for two. The place is popular and reservations are recommended but not required. Going after 7:00 p.m. without a reservation is usually not a problem.

My wife and I went there on a Thursday night at about 7:30. We were immediately seated at a table for two outside. Our waiter was a seasoned pro. He explained the menu, drinks and told us that they were out of the special.

We were not particularly hungry this night so we skipped the appetizers and went straight to the entrees. My wife ordered the grilled chicken with marinara pasta and I ordered the Seafood Combo Belizean Creole. The waiter stated that they were not serving the combo because they did not have lobster (out of season) and some other fish. I told him to give me more of the other fish and he was OK with that.

Our food was served in a reasonable time and it arrived hot. I tried my wife’s chicken. It was good but slightly overcooked and a little dry. The spicing was good and on the mild side. The pasta was el dente and the marinara was excellent. My creole was excellent. A wide variety of flavors gave way to a modest heat finish. They gave me some extra conch to make up for the lack of lobster. It was still a good variety with shrimp and snapper. The rice was done perfectly.

El Fogon is not on one of the three main drags and its prices are reasonable compared to other restaurants with comparable food. It’s one of the best values for good food on the island.

We enjoyed our dinner at El Fogon. They have created the space to look like an old authentic Belizean kitchen. The fogon (the wood oven) is outside, and a part of the main part of the restaurant. We ate under the palapa, near the Fogon with the traditional sand floors. Everything was perfectly prepared. We had conch fritters, shrimp, and blackened conch and red snapper, as well as the traditional stewed beef. All were terrific! It was a little spendy, and you definitely need dinner reservations—we learned the hard way (this was our second attempt at dinner at El Fogon, and they were turning walk up people away while we were dining).
