“Great resort, caring staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2012

This is my first tripadvisor review. We just returned from a fabulous stay at Victoria House. On the first night of our arrival, my husband got really sick (likely from something that had been incubating from 2-4 days prior). The hotel staff took great care of him, from getting a doctor to come to the hotel to check up on him, to picking up medication from the pharmacy in town, to making chicken soup (not on the menu) when he regained a bit of appetite. We are very grateful to the staff for taking such good care of us; my husband recovered quickly and was able to enjoy the rest of the vacation. The hotel is lovely, the grounds well maintained, the beach area bigger and better maintained than other hotels (judging from a walk we took from town back to the hotel). Oh, and the food was fantastic; the fish just melts in your mouth. Lots of activities/excursions are offered. We did snorkeling and diving -- the reef is amazing. We really did not want to leave, and look forward to returning (I don't usually return to the same places because I like to try something different).

After 6 nights in the rainforest we wanted somewhere to chill out before coming back to a British winter and we couldn't have picked a better spot. We had one of the Plantation rooms which had every amenity (except coffee maker) we needed and this included a decent sized mini-bar. According to the hotel's details we were at liberty to bring our own food and drink into the room as long as both were consumed either there or on our own balcony. We took advantage of this as mini-bars the world over are expensive and I give Victoria House the thumbs up for accepting that some 'smuggling' goes on and being adult about it. As has been said before, the people working there are fantastic. In fact, all the Belizeans we met were fantastic - offering lifts when we were out walking even though they weren't a part of the tourist industry. Being so close to the second largest barrier reef in the world was frustrating as I can't swim but I could have stayed on the hotel's private beach, in the shade of the palms and watched pelicans and frigatebirds until I collected my pension. As I said in my review of Chaa Creek eco-lodge on the Macal river, be aware that menus at every place we stayed or visited do not include an optional 10% service charge nor a 12.5% government tax. This may be the norm for American visitors but VAT is usually included in Britain. But if you're heading for Ambergris Caye then I can't think of anywhere better to stay.

We just returned from Victoria House after staying for 5 nights in a casita. The hotel is beautiful. The pier is perfect and goes quite far out into the ocean. The staff is so friendly. We did not encounter a single person who did not seem to enjoy catering to our needs. All were friendly and made our stay memorable and we see why this hotel has such high ratings. Lelow ( sorry for the spelling ) runs the Admiral Nelson bar and he makes you quite comfortable, Justin in the bar also , Thank you. We stayed in casita No. 10 which is closest to the beach. It was excellent, clean and private. Housekeeping does a great job. The pools were clean and the grounds spotless, breathtaking.
The snorkeling and side trips were set up by Luis on the pier and he is very well versed on every trip and what to expect. Snorkeling equipment and kayaks are available. We went on two trips. Ask for Manuel and Clifford. Excellent guides who enjoy taking people out and showing them Ambergris Caye.
VH has free bikes to ride into town, or rent a golfcart. San Pedro is crowded, yet easy to do. Elvi's Kitchen was perfect for lunch, Waraguma for "papusa's" and burrito's. Im sure many others are good, yet many times we came back to the resort to eat as the food, staff and ambiance are so good.
All the staff made our trip memorable. Wonderful resort. You will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Casita No. 10 was closest to the beach.

We spent time at the Victoria House in 2004 and 2005 and were ready to return. It was just as beautiful as it was before...with the addition of the new pool and villas!! Our room was Casita #1. We had stayed there for a night or two in 2005, but it would not have been our first choice for a casita this trip only because it is so close to the main pool and Palmilla and the resort was at full capacity. However, we did not have any complaints! The noise factor was not an issue at all; in fact, since we enjoy sitting by the main pool, it was the most convenient location if you needed something from the room! As before, the room was always well maintained! We received soap, towels, and other items each day or as needed.

The staff is amazing! No matter what he or she is there to do for the day, everyone always smiles and says hello or good morning or good night! From Marlin (who helped us to our room), to the dive shop to Roxy (who was always willing to take our order for drinks and snacks) to the wait staff to the bartenders to the gentlemen cleaning the beach to the ladies who cleaned our room, we did not encounter one person that did not make us feel welcome and relaxed.

The food was delicious! We both agreed that the food this trip was even better than it was in 2004 and 2005. We only ate lunch by the pool twice and dinner at Palmilla twice, but we could have eaten there many other times as there were several items on the menu that we wanted to try! (The grouper at Palmilla was really good!) We were fortunate that our trip began just before lobster season ended, so we had lobster everything for the first couple of days, including lobster ceviche, lobster tacos, and lobster quesadillas (all were great!).

Our previous stays were both in August, so we were concerned about the number of people that might be around since the VH was at full capacity. However, with the infinity pool and all of the excursions that people choose to do, we did not even notice a difference in the number of people.

We, once again, thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the VH! We have already begun planning our trip to Belize next year, and even though we plan to visit new places (Placencia or Roatan maybe) we will certainly spend several days back at the Victoria House! Thanks to everyone for another great stay!
