We did this trip on our own from a cruise ship a few weeks ago. You must remain calm because it's a bit of a hassle but so worth it. You will have to tender in and then catch a water taxi to Caye Caulker. And pay close attention to when you need to get the water taxi back particularly if ship's time does not match local time. The water taxi is one block outside of the cruise ship area. Don't be scared. Walk with authority and when approached just say, "Caye Caulker, Caveman." Pack plenty of waterproof sunscreen and just keep reapplying (remember to address the back of the legs--you're snorkeling!!). You will probably see more sea life in a few hours on this trip than the rest of your life put together. We floated with a manatees, swam with nurse sharks, met a sea turtle, scared an eel, watched a stingray shake off a hanger-on, and saw more beautiful fish than I could describe. We got SO much out of our experience with Daniel and Alwin that we are going back for a week at Thanksgiving. If you're a controlling planner person (as I am) do not worry if you don't get confirmation on your deposit. Not how things work there. Just confirm your reservation and know that they've got you covered when you get there. Bring water, towels, and some snacks. And LOTS of sunscreen.
