I usually don’t give out 5 easily but the food and the service were great; thank you Maira! My only suggestion is to dim the lights a bit low and add some candles- real or fake, to create more of an intimate ambiance. Had the romantic basil soup and Pastichio... yum yum..... will be going back to try so Lamb

Greek Food - at least in greater Chicagoland - occupies a space below Family Dining but above (often far above) Fast Food. “Gyro Joints” often serve souvlaki, dolmades, baklava for dessert, and sometimes a few other Greek specialties. Delicious, high value eats.

That’s NOT Basil’s. Basil’s is a white tablecloth, fine-dining spot (well, NEAR fine dining, anyway). The setting is attractive, if a bit vanilla. Service is capable, pleasant, and attentive.

The menu includes most familiar Greek offerings and a few for the more adventurous diner. Saganaki arrives at the table, flaming, with the celebratory shouts of “Opa!” Calamari is good and those previously mentioned more adventurous diners should try the grilled octopus. It does NOT taste “like chicken.” It’s much better. There are a number of lamb offerings - meatball, lamb Mac n Cheese, lamb shank.

There’s a variety of seafood options and several pastas. The Pastichio is satisfying comfort food, served with expertly grilled fresh vegetables.

Portions are generous. Wine and beer selection is inviting.

Entree prices run from the high teens to $30ish. That’s a lot by Gyro Joint Standards. But at Basil’s you DO get what you pay for.

Thank David V

WE love Basils patio dining and could not understand why we were the only couple dining out. Nice tables, comfortable chairs, umbrellas, lattice canopy in sections and fireplace and fire pit when needed, We did peek into the main dining area and lounge and know we will be happy there in the winter.
We had a very traditional Greek dinner and were totally pleased. We started with Saganaki, next a lovely presented Watermelon Feta Salad (the last weekend it is on the menu--we really lucked out. Moved on to Mousaka and my husband had the dinner Gyros. Ended with a flan with decorations made from caramelized spun sugar strands. Everything was presented well. Nikolas was our server and we hope we have him for all of our visits. The manager, Angelo, came to our table and made us feel welcomed and wanting to return. If you can't guess--YES, we will be back.

This is an old-school Greek restaurant that made me miss Chicago's historic Como Inn. The service was perfect; there was a decent beer and wine selection; it was fun to watch flaming Saganaki go to other tables; and our own food was delicious. I don't think I've ever had better grilled calamari. My husband ordered the lamb and I ordered salmon. Both were excellent, but if you're a lamb fan, get the roast lamb! Wow! Portions were good and prices fair.

We were greeted very warmly & seated right away. We originally sat outside, but then it started to rain & although the pergolas have a material covering the tops, they are not waterproof. The staff did not respond very quickly & one employee was more concerned about the paper menus not getting wet than he was about the diners. He didn't even hold the doors open for us or take our bottle of wine & glasses inside, but he was right there to hand us menus when we were seated at a table, even though we had already ordered while seated outside. If not for that simple faux pas, we would have selected Outstanding for service.

The food was tasty & presented very well, except for the spinach pie which was bland. The value is very good & we made a second meal with our leftovers.

The wine list is short & pricey, but we selected a $12 bottle of the Skouras Saint George Aghiorghitiko & were charged $40.

Definitely recommend this restaurant & we will return.
