Our taxi was met by a smiling and always helpful Simo to take us and our luggage to the riad, which we didn't always get at other riads. We had a warm welcome from Jean-Claude, with tea and biscuits and through to the end of our stay we enjoyed a very pleasant time. We had some of the best Moroccan meals of our holiday made by Rachida. Jean-Claude was always there to give helpful advice and ideas on where to visit. He was also very accommodating when we were unfortunately not very well. He has beautifully and sympathetically restored the riad to it's former glory and after a long day discovering the Medina it was nice to come back to the calm and tranquility of the riad either on the top sunny terrace or in the comfortable bedrooms. It was a very memorable stay.

Riad Laayoun is a lovely haven in the middle of the medina, but so quiet that it feels other-worldly. The riad was exquisitely restored by the owner, Jean-Claude. When we arrived, we were warmly received by Simo who guided around the neighbourhood to make sure we got our bearings. Still, we were happy to have stayed in for dinner on the first night - it was one of the best meals we had during our entire trip. Jean-Claude provided advice about our days' program, organized a guide for us to visit Fes, and made sure we had a great experience in this wonderful city.

What to say that hasn't been said?!

This is a lovely restored Riad owned by a French ex-pat - the fabulous Jean-Claude - who has a fantastic staff member called Simo, and refers his guests to a local guide called Fettah who is absolutely superb (and can be contacted and booked directly via his website for tours anywhere in the country http://moroccoguidedtours.com). Fettah is one of the best guides I have ever had in all my travels - just a lovely guy, and will tailor the tour to exactly what you want. His rates are very reasonable - 30 euro for two of us for a very full 5 hour tour.

J-C is extremely accommodating and even arranged for a beautiful birthday cake for my boyfriend at my request!

On general Fez tips - the money conscious among you may wish to know that eating out can be obtained at similar quality to the Riad but half the price (this isn't a criticism, I would expect a hotel to charge more than a local restaurant anywhere in the world!).

Also when planning a day trip, avoid going with the Riad's (v. pleasant) taxi driver Abdul as he charges the standard tourist industry prices (50-80 euro or some such) when you can do an identical trip yourself for 1/10 the price. For example we took a grande taxi (white ones) to the nearby town of Sefrou (1 euro each - 30 minute journey - they fill the taxi with locals like a bus!) then another to the village of Bhalid - village with troglodyte houses (30 cents each - 10 mins). We then went to Mama Aiysha's cave house which is where everyone goes...she lives in a cave - interesting to see, and we checked out some other cave houses, which was cool. Getting taxis back was no problem - they were ready and waiting. So if you're looking for a day trip I advise doing it this way, rather than by booking a car and driver for the whole day "tour". Although Morocco is "cheap" you'll be surprized at how much you actually spend, so if you are splashing out (as I was) on lovely accommodation like this, there are ways to save money on the extras :)

It's hard to fault the accommodation - if there is anything you are missing or need, I'm sure Jean-Claude or Simo would get it for you in an instant.

To sum up - the Riad is beautiful, staff and owner are lovely, and you won't regret staying here!

Room Tip: Cinnamon suite lovely. Paprika room small.

I fell in love with this place since the first time I put my feet on this Riad. High ceilings, beautiful and rich colored tiles, very incredible decor. Our bedroom was quite small actually, yet very Moroccan stylish. The bathroom, which was directly sighted from the bedroom, has a window, right in front of the closet. Totally unique!

The beautiful medina of Fez can be viewed from the rooftop terrace and it will reminds you of the tales of Aladdin and 1001 nights. We had spent so many hours in the afternoon just to muse and relax in the terrace, the most perfect place in Riad Laayoun.

The hosts, Jean Claude and Simo, were very kind, really helpful and we felt very welcome there. I will recommend this Riad to anyone who visit Fez, for sure!
