The hotel is amazingly beautiful, our room (the cheapest) was a bit small, but the rest was amazing, the terrace, the service.

If you want to do the hammam experience nearby, don't forget to buy your black soap and the sponge.

Never mind Dar Drissi, they should call this place TARDISSI; it is much bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. The other amazing thing about it is how quiet it is, considering it is stuck in the middle of a bustling market area. It was also surprisingly cool, even in June. I find it hard to fault the place; about the most critical thing I could come up with was that one of the electrical sockets looked a bit loose, and the stairs are not suitable for those who are unsteady on their feet. We were picked up at the airport by a taxi arranged by Kibir, Dar Drissi’s man on the spot. Kibir then met us at the car park with two burly sidekicks who carried our luggage to the riad. On the first day he gave us a quick tour of the building’s many floors, and pledged to do what he could to ensure we enjoyed our stay – a pledge he fulfilled in spades. He arranged a guide for us on day two, a visit to a hammam (steam room) on day three and on our last night recommended a restaurant so two of our four-strong party could celebrate their birthdays. I am not saying Fes’s old town is impenetrable or hard to navigate, but with the steam room and the restaurant, in both cases we were escorted by representatives of the establishments from our front door to their front doors to ensure we got there. I can’t imagine that happening in London, somehow. We stayed in the sumptuous Grand Salon and could easily have smuggled the entire family in there with room left over for an impromptu game of cricket on the adjoining gallery-cum-balcony. Whether our teenaged sons would have enjoyed the stay, is hard to say. There is no TV, but there is wi-fi, and there are plenty of sights, smells and sounds in the day to enchant, but not much night life other than fine dining, people watching, shopping and haggling. If your kids are into messing about on the beach, amusement arcades and theme parks, this is not the holiday for them. If they are into experiencing a fast disappearing world that looks like something out of an Indiana Jones movie, this is a magnificent place to have a short break. I would heartily recommend Dar Drissi.

Room Tip: Electrical plug sockets are two-pin affairs. UK-style three-pin plugs are provided, but guests tend to take them home with them, attached to hair dryers or laptops, so pack an adapter. There is a hair-dryer on the premises, by the way. If you are arriving in the evening, or even if you are not, it is well worth arranging for a home-cooked meal for the first day. The cooking was superb; best meal we had all holiday. The cook (who also doubles as the maid) needs 24 hours notice so she can buy the ingredients.

A delightful and restful break in beautiful surroundings. We had the large double room and it was magnificent. The views from the roof over the city and beyond are fantastic and its a lovely place to relax and watch birds circling in the evenings. The hospitality is warm and helpful. Thank you, we will come again.

Room Tip: For couples the large room at the top is magical.

Dar Drissi was a beautiful and comfortable riad. It really surprised us when we got there. I guess we expected a fairly austere riad like many of our others we had been to, but we were very pleased when we got there. It's over 300 years old, very elegant and beautiful. Much of it is original (restored). Modern, western facilities, very quiet - off the beaten path. We felt secure and safe and thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. We added an extra day because we were enjoying the comfort so much. I highly recommend it. If and when I return to Morocco, I will definitely stay at Dar Drissi in Fez.

Room Tip: The two salons are the best, especially if you are travelling with groups.

We had a lovely 4 day stay in Dar Drissi . The manager could not do enough to help you and was very happy to arrange visits and transfers. House restored to it original beauty and the roof terrace a bonus. Will visit again very soon
