We are about to leave Marrakech and I can’t say enough good things about Riad Plein Sud - we’ve had such a wonderful time.
When we arrived the manager was here to greet us and gave us a very detailed introduction to Marrakech with a map and lots of tips on where to go and how to avoid tricksters. This was super useful as the city can feel a little overwhelming at first!
The riad is gorgeous and is kept clean and tidy by the wonderful housekeeper Raja - she is very warm and kind. The location is perfect as it is far enough from Jemaa el-Fna (the main square) to give you a little headspace from the madness but close enough to comfortably walk 15-20 minutes through the souk when you want to head into town. The surrounding streets always felt safe whilst we were here and there are lots of little shops etc on the main road should you need anything. We stopped off at a tiny pizza takeaway (literally based in one of the shuttered units alongside the road, they have a counter that is black and white and says ‘bla bla bla’ on the side) near Riad Laarousse on a couple of occasions after tiring ourselves out walking all day and took pizza back to Plein Sud, highly recommend doing so if you pass by - the pizza costs about 15d (less than £1.50) and is pretty good! The guys there are really friendly too.
We opted for bed and breakfast whilst staying at Plein Sud - each morning Raja serves a simple breakfast of orange juice, bread, jam, coffee etc. Nothing fancy but plenty to set you up for the day.
Khalil, who looks after the riad in the evening, was so friendly and helpful during our stay. He has a great sense of humour and is a very hard worker - we were honestly amazed at the hospitality we received.
Our bedroom was a very generous size and had everything we needed - the shower was better than ours at home and much hotter! The decor throughout the riad is lovely - traditional Moroccan, very homely and comfortable.
There is a roof terrace which gets lots of sun throughout the day, perfect if you’re keen to catch a tan but decide against baring skin outside the riad (I would advise covering shoulders and legs above the knee, I did so and I wasn’t approached in a negative way during the trip. A scarf pinned with a brooch works super well over a vest top when trying to stay cool but discrete!).
Anyway I could go on but overall would highly recommend staying here - no frills, amazing hospitality, fantastic value for money.
