"You are always welcome to Morocco” are the words that we heard many times from Bari during our correspondence prior to our arrival. The words held true. From the moment we steped off the plane in Casablanca, our wonderful driver Zaid welcomed us and took a good care of us during the entire trip. The hotels or riads chosen by Bari were nice (we loved the one in Fes) and the itinerary was designed to see the most interesting places during such short visit. We visited Casablanca, Chefchauen, Marrakesh, Dades Valley, Fes, Atlas Mountains, and the SAHARA with the overnight stay in the desert camp. The country is absolutely beautiful and the people are very friendly. I would recommend 4x4 company with no reservation to anyone who wants to spend a good time in Morocco at a reasonable price.

First of all, I want to thank Bari for being such an amazing host, and providing us with the best itinerary to fit our needs. Although my wife and I both like the freedom to travel on our own, the private tour was THE BEST CHOICE for us covering all that we did in the amount of time that we had in Morocco. Our driver was great, he even played music familiar to us. Every place we visited, and riads were amazing. All around people were very friendly, and not just because we were potential buyers. They were just happy to see foreigners interested in their country. I hope that this review helps others, as the reviews I read prior to our trip helped me. We recommend this company 100%.

Thank David M

Bari was very helpful throughout the planning process :) My guide Ahmed was very knowledgeable and taught me a lot about Moroccan culture. The tour covered the famous/popular must visit sites and I had a great time there! Highly recommended! :)

I recently returned from a great trip to Morocco with Morocco Tours 4x4 and particularly our driver/guide Mubarak. My travel companion Zach recently posted an exhaustive review of our trip, so I will not be redundant but rather expound on or add selected aspects of the trip.

In planning the trip, Bari was very responsive and pleasant to deal with. During any trip there are always unexpected problems, including my delayed arrival, and he quickly made alternative arrangements or amends. Touring in a small group in a 4x4 with a local tour company provided a much more “up close and personal” view of the country than one would get in a big tour group, and is highly recommended.

That being said, we did spend more time in the car than we expected, including some day long drives. It is important to appreciate driving times rather than mileage, as while the roads are in excellent condition, there are no superhighways and mountain passes take a lot of time. Morocco is a physically beautiful and diverse country and on one trip we saw snow on the Atlas mountains, rode a camel to and spent the night in a luxury tented camp in the stunning Sahara and ate grilled fish we had picked out in Essaouira while gazing at the Atlantic ocean. During our 2 ½ week trip, we also visited or stopped at Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen, Voublis, Meknes, Fes, Dades Valley, Ourzazate, Imlil and Marrakech. One has to make a fully informed decision balancing the amount of driving with time available, and not be overly ambitious.

A special shout-out about Chefchauoen which was probably our favorite stop. The medina is much more intimate and manageable than those in the larger cities, and has a more mellow vibe. This beautiful “blue city” in the Rif mountains should be highly considered if time permits.

Mubarak is an extremely pleasant and likeable person, who embodies the noted “Berber hospitality.” He went out of his way all the time to make sure our needs were satisfied. He is extremely knowledgeable about all things Moroccan and rightly proud of his wonderful country. He is an excellent driver and seemed to know every road, restaurant and clean Western bathroom in the entire country.

Regarding travel in February, the daytime temperatures hovered around a pleasant 60 degrees F or so, but it did get cold at night, 40 degrees or somewhat less. Some riads were a bit underheated at night. This is the trade-off for travelling in the off-season when the country is less crowded with tourists. We missed a snowfall that closed some mountain passes by just a week. March would be a more ideal month, and certainly April.

We stayed exclusively in riads, which is a unique Moroccan experience that should not be missed and is much better than staying in hotels. Some were newer construction but most were beautifully restored old courtyard homes, and the rooms were spacious and well-appointed. Occasionally as retro-fit old buildings there were issues with heat or hot water in the shower being suboptimal. The hospitality level was high, and we felt warmly welcome at the riads as well as everywhere in the country.

I began planning our trip to Morocco about 9 months out and Bari, who runs the logistic part of the company, quickly provided an itinerary which we fine-tuned over dozens of emails for many months. He was extremely patient with me and always replied quickly to my questions and requests. In the end, I settled on a 17-day tour which included 9 different locations in Morocco.

The trip began in Casablanca where our international flight landed from NYC. We were met outside, after baggage claim and customs, by our driver, Mubarak, who was holding a sign with my name on it. We loaded up his SUV (a 2011 Toyota Landrover in excellent condition) and proceeded to our first stop, the Hassan II Mosque. As our arrival was a bit delayed we had missed the last tour of the day (since it was Friday, they end the tours early) but Mubarak arranged for us to join a private guide that was leading a small group from Chile. He told us to just tip the guide at the end and meet him at the entrance where he dropped us off.

This was the first small issue of the tour: Mubarak knew we did not have any local currency and that we needed to go to an ATM. When our tour finished at the appointed time, Mubarak was nowhere to be found. Our guide became agitated, repeatedly asking for his "tip", with my explaining that our driver would pay him. This went on for about 20 minutes until Mubarak reappeared, casually mentioning to us that he had been praying. While it is important to be respectful of other cultures, I don't think he should have disappeared on us without prior explanation, after we had just been with him for an hour and had no resources of our own.

We quickly forgot this as Mubarak proved himself to be an excellent driver, with extensive knowledge of his country. He was good-humored throughout our long tour, has a wonderful sense of humor, and is warm and generous. His English is exceptional. I do have a few suggestions, however, that could have made our experience even better. He answered many calls each day on his cell phone. Sometimes he would speak for just a minute or two, but on some occasions the length of the calls was extensive. He was driving with one hand, on difficult twisting roads, while holding his cell phone in the other.

At the very least he should use a blue tooth device. Even better, he should not take calls while driving, unless it is an emergency. This made us uncomfortable and we mentioned it a couple of times but the calls continued. It also slowed us down, as almost all of our transfers were long and on one lane roads where passing into oncoming traffic is done frequently to bypass slow moving vehicles. Although Mubarak did not attempt to do so while on the phone, the calls slowed us down considerably each time he was on the phone as we would cruise behind a cargo truck or other vehicle, way below the speed limit.

The hotels recommended by Bari were mostly excellent. As we were traveling during low season, we sometimes received upgrades of our room type. In a few cases, rooms that we had been told we were getting were not available. I am not sure if these were mistakes on the part of the riads where we stayed, or with the company, but in most cases, they were remedied. Several of the riads were truly extraordinary such as Chez Pierre in the Dades Valley, Riad Cherifa in Chefchaouen, Riad Madu and its sister luxury desert camp in Merzouga, Villa Maroc in Essaouira and Riad Anika in Marrakech.

Although Mubarak served as a general guide in addition to being our driver in many destinations, in certain cities we were supplied with an expert guide for a full-day tour in Fes (the fascinating and intelligent Kamal) and a half-day tour in Marrakech (not nearly as good). Certain attractions and sights also had guides that varied in quality but most were good. Be aware that in Morocco you need loose change to tip for lots of things including almost all bathrooms, even in restaurants where you are purchasing a meal, and for the guides everywhere. Change is hard to come by so stock up, when and where you can, on small notes or coins.

The overall itinerary was good and we covered an immense area of Morocco. However, we were not prepared for the length of many or the drives and transfers. I specifically explained when I started the booking process that I did not want to spend all day in a car, and in fact, we did so on several occasions, albeit with mostly interesting stops. Perhaps this is unavoidable given the size of the country and travel conditions. Although road infrastructure is very good in Morocco, roads are mostly one lane in each direction--many are very twisty and there are frequent police stops to inspect documents.

One recommendation would be to let the client know in advance on transfer times so they can alter their itinerary accordingly. And clients should decide how long they wish to stop for lunch. Often we were taken to a touristy and overpriced lunch spot where lunch would take 60 to 90 minutes for average food at best. I would have preferred more local, non-touristy stops for lunch or the ability to grab something and eat in the car, although all the places we stopped were chosen in part because they had clean and mostly Western toilets. Finally, after expressing this to Mubarak he did take us to a couple of places where he informed the staff we wished to be served something quick and simple. Also, because so many of our dinners, whether on our own or provided at the riads we stayed in were excellent and very large, there was no need to eat such big lunches. If not for all the walking we did, we surely would have gained a lot of weight!

Customer service, both by Mubarak and by Bari during the trip was excellent. One of our fellow traveler's flight was delayed many hours and Mubarak went back to pick her up at the airport, separately, late at night, even though this made for a very long day for him. He was also punctual and always had a smile on his face. He accompanied us into each Riad for check-in to ensure that everything was ok with our accommodation, although on a few occasions, as mentioned there were problems that we had to try to sort out on our own. Bari always responded to emails regarding any issues we were having and was able to remedy almost all of them. On the few occasions when he couldn't, he generously made up for it in some other nice way. I would not hesitate to travel with Morocco 4 x 4 tours again, would recommend them highly, and would be happy to answer any questions about specifics.

Thank zachnyc
