This was a tour with Exelans Tourism. Our local guide gave us a very detailed background regarding the history of this Royal UNESCO Heritage Compound. It was like taking a walk through the Malagasy history amongst Queens and Kings, years of peace and violence.
The view is fantastic from any angle of the hill, lots of photo-ops. You can see Tana from a distance. There are plenty of shade trees in the garden, which is terraced and seperated by steps. I can understand, why the Royal family preferred to spend the summers here. It was a time well spent.

This property has such a wonderful intact ground that you can't really believe its so old. You get to literally walk through history in a way that makes you feel like you were able to see it when it was current. They have preserved the grounds so amazingly well and they have such a large collection of original furnishings in addition to the original buildings and structures, its rather incredible. Its very unexpected given the country's history and economic status over the centuries.

This is the original capital of the Merida Royal family. It brings to life all the history I had read about. It costs 10,000 ar each to get in and 600 for the use of a camera. We had a fantastic English speaking guide for an hour and a half. We gave him 10,000 ar as he was so good. The rooms are well preserved with a lot of original features and furniture. The views are spectacular overlooking Tana and the seven hills.

For a nice early walk in Tana coupled with lovely views of the city, I'd recommend Ambohimanga. Guides, compulsory, give a general overview.
