Owner description: Mozambique’s southern province of Maputo is home to this reserve, a sandy and humid habitat that is still working to replenish its wildlife population that was destroyed in 1970s civil wartime.

Take your time to drive through the reserve, bar the Elephants you should also see a range of birds. The reserve is in very good condition and makes for a nice day out.

Over the many years visiting Mozambique it really is special to note that changes in the MSR are constantly positive where better care is given to preserve the beauty and natural environment; assistance is given for wildlife to flourish with restocking programs and protection; and communities in and around the area are given opportunities to learn and grow.
Keep up the good work

It's a long drive +-3-4 Hours, but worth it. We didn't see elephants, lots of monkeys, buffalo and giraffe. There's no signs - so difficult when you don't have Tracks4Africa. The sand is thick, but we didn't have any difficulty and didn't get stuck. Scenery is beautiful.

We spend a lot of time on Inhaca island, which borders the Maputo Elephant Reserve. The wildlife was persecuted during and after the civil war until the country stabilized, but it is recovering very fast. Each time we visit, we see hippos, crocs and elephant. We also often see small antelope including species like Duiker, Suni and others. The bird life is prolific. A few notes, there is usually a trespass fee and you have to take your time to explore and find the wildlife. The roads are "two track", which we call sand ranch roads in Texas. It takes a long time to drive to the reserve much less explore it, so you should plan to spend several days. Stay away from the small lakes because hippos and crocs might hurt you. Also, do not forget your malaria prophylactic. All of that said, it is a wonderful place with access to lonely and beautiful beaches.

We were with a group of 5 and we loved it. We had accomodation at an eco-lodge and I will definitely go back there everytime I'm in Mozambique. I won't write much more about this hidden paradise....
