Owner description: Mozambique’s southern province of Maputo is home to this reserve, a sandy and humid habitat that is still working to replenish its wildlife population that was destroyed in 1970s civil wartime.

This reserve is a special place, definitelly worth visiting. Even if there were no wildlife, the beautiful scenery makes it worth a visit: bush, plains, reeds, lakes and - a cherry on the top - access to the beach. Have visited more than five times in the past two years, and have always seen elephants, but not only: we've crossed paths with more than 15 giraffes at once, various antilopes, zebra, gnu, hippo, crocodile ... A repopulation is still in process, but already now it is just beautiful ...
Roads are sandy and require 4x4. There are few signs in the park, but also few crossroads and guards will be happy to inform you about the route.

Amazing landscapes, the scenario is magnificent. All rangers are very friendly and always willing to assist. It’s a plus that one has now tarred road all the way up to the main gate (except if coming from Kosy Bay/Ponta do Ouro). Once inside the park a 4x4 is required, preferably with high clearance. The only main concern to travelers is really the lack of signs, but if you follow the electricity posts you will not get lost
And yes, animals, we saw plenty elephants, zebras and giraffes. And lots of birds, some monkeys and pala palas.
Make sure you take sufficient water, food and petrol, there are no facilities inside the park, only restrooms at the gates and a small coffee shop at the main gate
Definitively worth a visit

Nice park with fantastic landscapes. Not that many animals but the rangers told me that they are making a plan to bring in more animals. The population of animals suffered a lot during the civil war that took 16 years and many animals were killed during that time.

Take your time to drive through the reserve, bar the Elephants you should also see a range of birds. The reserve is in very good condition and makes for a nice day out.

Over the many years visiting Mozambique it really is special to note that changes in the MSR are constantly positive where better care is given to preserve the beauty and natural environment; assistance is given for wildlife to flourish with restocking programs and protection; and communities in and around the area are given opportunities to learn and grow.
Keep up the good work
