We have just returned from our trip to Uganda and our stay at the Protea was a little slice of heaven. Uganda is overwhelming to the senses, and Kampala is chaotic, dirty, hot and challenging. We had booked ourselves into the Africana, but finding that hotel extremely seedy, we went in search of the Protea, which I had seen advertised in "The Eye", a Ugandan travel magazine. The minute we walked in the door I knew we had to stay there. Clean, cool and comtemporary, this hotel is a respite from the reality of Kampala. The staff was accomodating and extremely generous to us. They literally treated us like royalty and provided us with everything we wanted. The rooms are clean, sleek, and attractive; the service is excellent. We ate most of our meals there because the food is delicious and they have a delightful indoor/outdoor dining area that we found most relaxing. The only
negative to the experience is the mattresses are inexplicably hard even though we prefer firm sleeping surfaces, but that was a small inconvenience compared to the whole experience. We would definitely stay there again if we return to Kampala. This is most definitley a first class hotel!
