“Great Service and beautiful property”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2010

This hotel was a much needed relief after spending 6 days trekking Nepal and staying 3 nights in a disgusting hotel in Kathmandu. It is a beautiful property with beautiful grounds, complete with ducks and geese. The service was excellent, continental breakfast and lunch buffet was delicious and offered a variety of wonderful edibles! The only negative is that the carpet in the hallways leading into the rooms was disgustingly dirty, soiled and smelled. Why not eliminate one employee's salary and replace the carpets?

Had a fantastic stay here. The garden area is a great place to relax and chill out. It far enough away from the main roads and Thamel to be very quiet and peaceful. The food and service were good. The lounge / bar area was a good place to also chill out and relax. Would stay here again.

Hotel Yak & Yeti was the low-light of an otherwise wonderful trip to Nepal. The worst was when I left my luggage UNLOCKED with the hotel concierge for 4 hours -- only to discover when I returned to the US that my camera was missing! The hotel management sent me a glib email saying they're certain all their employees are 100% honest -- yeah right! And then refused to help when I tried to claim the camera as lost with my travel insurance. NOT what you'd expect from a 5-star hotel. My only lesson: always keep your belongings unlocked, no matter how nice the hotel seems.
Plus, be aware that all amenities (like the fitness room, sauna, internet) charge extra.

I think it is important to put this hotel in context. Nepal is the 17th poorest country in the World based on GDP per capita. As such, it would be unfair and unrealistic to compare a 5 star hotel in Nepal to one in Paris. Powercuts and water shortages are a growing problem in Kathmandu. So even if you are at a five star hotel you will need to tolerate small delays in power availability whilst the generators kick in, and the need to drink bottled water even in your hotel.

The Yak & Yeti is listed as a 5 star hotel, and indeed, you will find all the amenities and services expected of a five star hotel. (I was not a business traveller in Kathmandu, and thus I cannot comment on the business services.)

As you pull up to this hotel, you will be impressed by the Grand palace to your left which houses the hotel restaurants, boutiques, casino and ballroom. There is a lot of history in this building and it is worth investigating.

I would recommend requesting a room which has wooden floors, and a garden view. I stayed in the suite 530. It was spacious, clean, quiet and comfortable. The bathroom was clean and not extravagant. The grounds and 2 swimming pools are well maintained considering the water shortages.

Breakfast buffet was lavish - you will definately enjoy it.

Regarding location, you are a few minutes walk from the Royal Palace museum, where the masacre took place; and about 8-10minutes walk to Thamel district with all its conveniences. Kathmandu is small, and everything is within a short taxi ride, which is also cheap if you ensure that they turn on their meters.

This hotel has its own unique character, unlike other 5-star chain hotels. I would recommend this hotel for people who have had a hard trek and need a bit of pampering with access to a spa, pool, tennis courts etc. Don't spend more than 2-3 days here as other Kathmandu hotels have different cultural encounters and experiences to offer.

As long as you have realistic expectations, you will enjoy the Yak & Yeti.

We stayed several nights at this hotel, immediately after arriving to Nepal and before leaving. I wouldn't rate it as five-stars, but it's definitely a good hotel in an excellent location. It's at walking distance from the Thamel and the local market. It's very close to the Durbar Marg where you can find good restaurants.
The rooms are Ok, be aware that air condition may not always work. It depends on electricity supply. The stuff is friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet is Ok, but nothing to write home about.
Overall, a good place to return after spending all of the day outside.
