“Average accommodation with rock solid reliable staff and safety measures”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 January 2012

It's hard to get excited about the rooms here, these are just so so. Hotel's courtyard is pleasant though can be a curse in case someone starts a party there in the nightime. The cost is above average.

The reason to be here is that the hotel has excellently trained and reliable staff and very good management which is not so common in Nepal. You'll not have a problem of not hot water and staff will help you in whatever you will need or like. Hotel maintain very strict safety measures having security personnel on guard in the night.

While this hotel will not impress you with it's luxory, it's very rich in it's human capital. So if you're not looking for fancy room and simple is enough for you but you need rock solid reliability, go for Potala Guest House.

Room Tip: Take a rooms with windows to courtyard, and at any cost avoid budget rooms.

I reserved this hotel online a month prior to arriving with my only request being a quiet, comfortable room. I was assured in my confirmation that a ''garden-facing" double room was reserved for us. When we eventually get to the hotel after our very long flights, they give me the keys to a noisy road-facing, completely dirty with trash piled to the side, room. It wasn't like they did not know we were coming since they sent an airport pick-up. I went back down to the desk, where our only other option was this small dingy, room, garden-facing, but noisier than Grand Central Station. For the remaining time in our dingy room with the rock hard lumpy thing they called a mattress, we got absolutely no rest. People talking in the garden right by our room, we heard every noise from the guests in the other rooms through the thin walls, roosters crowing, dogs barking all night long! Quiet room, what a joke!
The only thing positive I can say about this place is they have a nice rooftop area, but after getting no rest in that noisy room, I decided to check out the next day and take my chances somewhere else.

I chose this hotel upon recommendation from a friend who had stayed here before. It was also due to the location that's quite central and easy access to everything you can think of. The hotel location is smackdabbed between shops, doesn't have that much of an appeal. My check-in was fairly smooth, the staff at the front desk thought i was a nepali because of my asian feature (and perhaps i do look like a nepali) and didn't quite show their interest in attending to me at first until i showed my passport to them. *chuckles* I was then showed to my room which was old (yes shabby is the word to describe) but clean. I was a little skeptical about lying on the sheets and using the blankets at first because it doesn't look all that clean (my biggest fear was bed bugs!) but after convincing myself that i'm not in nepal to live a luxurious life, i made do with it for the next 2 nights.

The hotel has a restaurant (serve mostly chinese dishes) which i would never recommend to anyone to try. It takes more than 30 minutes for your food to come. There are better restaurants around with better service.

The only plus side about this hotel is the friendly staff at the front desk. They all liked making conversations with me. I think they were more amused about me traveling alone, being a tiny girl carrying large backpack than anything else.

I would return to stay in this hotel again, not for the service or conditions of room but for the location only. You come to Kathmandu not to stay in your room the whole day, so it really doesn't matter in the end if the hotel or the rooms are shabby.

Room Tip: Get a room that doesn't face the street. I had a room that faced the streets and you can hear do...

I have to start by admitting that I stayed at the Potala Guest House (total of 5 nights) as part of an organized trip so I don't actually know how much the rooms cost. This means i can't tell you if the hotel is worth the price. I stayed in a deluxe room which was VERY spacious, with a full-service bathroom (a real bath/shower combo). My experience was pleasant.

Of course, you're talking about Nepal here so service is nothing like you would expect in the US but taken with a grain of salt and a bit of humor, everything works out just fine. Sometimes the computers aren't working, but when they do they offer free internet. They posted all the post cards I entrusted them with (the guidebook had said not to trust hotels because they often don't bother mailing things - but that wasn't the case for me). Breakfast was simple but good. All of these things make the hotel just an average place. And as in everywhere in Thamel, bring ear plugs. Fighting dogs and roosters seem to be nocturnal animals here...

What set this place apart was the rooftop terrace. I spent a big chunk of time up there reading and journaling with a view of the snow-capped mountains far away. It was very quiet up there, I'm not sure a lot of the guests even knew about it. It's lush with tropical plants and has a few tables and chairs - nothing fancy but a great way to find a moment of peace and quiet in Kathmandu.

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms are much bigger and have a real bathroom with a bath tub.

Arrived at 11pm with guide from trekking co. who helped with the desk clerk. Coming straight from the airport with no daytime yet in Kathmandu, the approach was a bit scary. Bars on the windows, at the entrance, and a laughing, crazy drunk from the place next door. The room on the 4th floor was clean, but dingy, and the bathroom wasn't fully functional - the shower had only a cold trickle (this was true in the morning as well), and the toilet handle was warped so that it took some finesse to get it to flush (bad idea to open the tank and peer inside!) Place looked better in the morning when I saw an oasis of tropical plants between the two wings of the building - but I'd not recommend this place given the many others in Thamel.

Room Tip: I stayed in a room that was in the bottom of the "U" shape, on the 4th floor, which may ha...
