Owner description: The backpacking district of Khao San Road is the traveler hub of South East Asia. Jam-packed with raucous bars and restaurants as well as budget hostels, it’s a favorite for late-night revelers.

We took our teenagers to our favourite place iwhen we travelled in 1996. They embraced the chaos. One got a henna tattoo the other braided hair and both bought some street food,. They freaked at scorpions on a stick and moaned when there was no wifi.(rare)
We all bought the cheap T shirts, necklaces and tat and laughed all afternoon on how quickly we were blending in. We bored our kids senseless with stories of how it used to be in the good old days . But they loved it just the same .
It's safe fof families , just don't take too much money to be scammed or tempted by all the goodies and fake Superdry. We let the kids loose to walk and discover stuff for themselves .
It brought back some very fond memories for us and gave the kids some great new ones of their own. 1st Tatoo ! 1st scorpion and tarantula ! First time Mum and Dad tell them some real adventure stories of before they were born. It's hyped up and there are newer places but go all the same . If only to stock up on pressies and chat to other travellers. Beware though ,although quiet enough during the day, nightime is a completely different story and can get very boisterous boozy ,, larey and loud! !!

We only walked down this road because it was on the way back to our hotel. If you're in Bangkok for culture, don't go to Khao San road. It's full of westerners, western restaurants, cheap souvenirs and badly spelled t-shirts.

We stayed here back in the early '80's and it was the place to be...not sure why as I have very clear memories of staying in what was essentially a bamboo fire trap! It was all very exciting and maybe the motorbikes and tuktuks that sped easily through the streets of Bangkok had something to do with the free and easy feel of the place but having recently visited and looked in earnest for signs of the 'free and easy spirit' that we once thought of as Khao San Road...I thought I saw some remnants...but mostly I saw something that more resembled the ramshackle firetrap we once took for 'accommodation'.

Not comparable with the Khaoson like it was until 07/2018: since 1st of August 2018 the shops are prohibited to sell on the street before 6 p.m.
Khaosan now looks like any other street during daytime.
The night life seems to be louder and more aggressive than before.
So: stay away and save your time for visiting temples and have an nice distressing massage somewhere else !
