Halong Bay, is a 3.5 hours drive from Hanoi. Its had UNESCO status since 1994. They say there are 1,969 Islands 40 of them inhabited.
We opted for the day tour, with lunch and a visit to 2 caves, with hindsight we should have chosen an overnight stay, as you sail to a different part of the bay, fro the day trippers, and we would have seen more.
It was very overcast during our trip, but we still enjoyed the experience, there was a few things we did not like, the amount of rubbish that floats in the bay, the mass of tourists that visit, some with very bad manners the Korean's that spit and push everywhere.
I hope this beautiful place does not become a victim of its own success.
