Hoan Kiem Lake is a dynamic daily tableau, from morning walks amid locals doing exercises on the shore, to young couples water-gazing on park benches, to the multiple shopping and sight-seeing opportunities in the vicinity. By night it is beautifully lighted and by day it’s a peaceful walk after battling traffic. Watch the tai chi classes by the lake .

We wandered along here Saturday morning when there was a gathering on warning about land mines and lots of students were about asking foreigners to practise their English. It is a fun, friendly place with plenty if places to eat. At night it is lit up and there is music playing which adds to the atmosphere. Do go!

It’s a nice place in Hanoi to visit. There are some benches near the lake, so it’s possible to sit near the lake and enjoy the view. There are quite a few people there all the time, so it’s quite crowded and noisy especially on the weekend but still very nice. It looks like a very good place for families with children as there are many different attractions there. There are also quite a few coffe places, cafes and restaurants around the lake as well as live street music, dancing, performances, games, and street food

Went for a stroll around the lake whilst looking for shops. Both were fruitful. Plenty of shops, cafes etc. But more importantly it is a very enjoyable walk. We loved the lake views, the "buskers" around the lake and the culture and people we encountered. Very relaxing area and great for people watching.

If visiting Hanoi and staying in one of Hanoi's many Old Quarter boutique hotels, Hoan Kiem Lake will be a welcome retreat from the insanely congested noisy streets and provide a degree of sanity with the lake's wide paved promenades affording a scenic and relatively hustle-free walking or jogging circuit.
The sights include the Ngoc Son Temple on a small island which can be accessed across a foot bridge which is lit at night an provides wonderful photo opportunities both day and night. Also of interest is the early morning and evening exercise rituals performed lakeside where the locals partake in all forms of activity, ranging from Tai Chi to calligraphy. The artistically attractive and elegant calligraphy on the lakeside pavers are often performed by elderly men using water and a brush to mark the Chinese characters, ever so briefly as the water evaporates.
The lake is surrounded by many colourful trees and gardens with regularly placed bench seating providing the opportunity to sit and soak-in the views and activities.
In March we found the streets and the roundabout at the northern end of the lake closed to traffic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. This enables visitors and tourists to experience carnival like activities with the locals and their children as they enjoy the evening with family and friends.
