We took the nicest train - Victoria Express - from Hanoi to Sapa. It was good service and a good photo op, but it was so loud, bumpy and expensive. Once you arrive in Sapa you then have to take a taxi or shared bus 45 minutes to the actual town of Sapa.

The Sapa Express or a more luxury van like Green Lion are both faster, more direct, cheaper, and nicer.

it was a generally nice experience overnight train from Lao Cai to Hanoi. We booked a 2 berth cabin, in other words bought the other 2 beds as well. It turned out that we made the right decision, as the cabin was indeed very small and little space to move around. Please bring cabin luggage as you certainly cant open any luggage beyond that size given the small space in the cabin. The ride was not that smooth nor bumpy, but we managed to catch some sleep throughout the night. Toilet was small and clean, you cant expect too much as compared to those Euro trains. To us, this is good enough to live through the experience

We caught the Train to Sapa using the Victoria sleeper carriages.

Well we had a four sleeper carriage occupied by my wife and myself, if four people had to use it I am not sure where the luggage would be put. If you are over 1.82 meters you will find it very difficult to sleep as the bunks can only be 1.82 meters long.

I would suggest that you take sleeping pills as you certainly will not be able to sleep whilst the train is moving, the noise from the rails is horrendous.

We were pleased to get off the train and at the same time knowing that we would not be returning to Hanoi by train.

However with all this we are pleased we took the train one way as it was certainly an experience.

I was good to meet our guide who took us to our hotel for a well earned sleep.

We used the Sapaly Express carriage on the Hanoi to Lao Cai trip. We booked the 4 berths for 2 people. The compartment was then made up as 2 single beds with the additional mattress laid one on top of the other. Fresh nice smelling sheets and a comfortable pillow and thinish doona. It was warm enough kept socks on and light long sleeved t shirt material top over long shorts. Small snack items and water supplied. We had a great sleep and woke once during the night when the train stopped somewhere. We had a weekend type bag and plenty of room for that wouldnt recomend large suitcases. Unsure about all the complaints.

in fact there is only one train from Hanoi to Lao Cai at 10.00 p.m. and there are different couches with different names/
Basically are the same very old train coaches with some minimal redecoration. We booked Chapa Express and the mattresses and bed linen were fairly new and comfortable but it can not cancel the smell of the old train.
Also don't accept a booking without reserved places then they will put you at the end of corridor just near the toilet and above the wheels and it's terribly noisy.
If you are in the middle of the coach you will get a much better sleep.
