Just did the Saigon by Night Vespa Tour and can highly recommend it - great fun to cruise through Ho Chi Minh on a Vespa and visit 5 locations, having 9 different local dishes and free-flow drinks! Highlight was the visit of a hidden Vietnamese music gem...
If we could give out 6 stars, we would. By far this was the most fun we have ever had on a tour. There were four of us and were picked up at our hotel with four vintage Vespas and great drivers. We were on the night tour so it included food and drinks plus an amazing ride through downtown Saigon districts. If you have never seen the chaotic traffic in Saigon (5,000,000 motor scooters in the city) it is hard to describe what it is like to weave your way in and through scooters, cars, buses and pedestrians. After you get over the first impression that you will never survive the evening, it will be the most fun you will ever have. The city is beautiful at night and we stopped five times for cocktails, food, and entertainment. Our evening was led by a remarkable young guide, Jason, who led us through the 10 food courses explaining how to use all the sauces and ingredients to enhance the dishes.
If you only have one night in Saigon, book this tour. It will be worth it and an experience you will never forget
This was a hoot. I've never been on the back of a bike before, let alone in the traffic of Saigon, but it was just such fun. Once you get over the "I might die tonight" moment when you first head out into the seething traffic, it was great. The food enjoyable and music venues and performers about as diverse as you can get. Whilst you're eating street food the stalls have been vetted to meet the VVA standards so you don't need to fret about getting sick. Our tour guide Katie was great and shared lots of her own stories about Vietnam and growing up in Saigon. VVA are a very professional group and - if you're going to risk your neck on the back of a bike - then they're the ones to do it with. I'd do it again and take my kids along.
Did this tour 2 years ago and loved it just as much the second time. This tour is simply the best for young and for old, just leave your fear at home, throw caution to the wind and just do it as this will be the best fun you will have in Vietnam. You will see the real Saigon, eat real local food and be entertained at real venues.
We did the night Vespa tour on our last night in Saigon & it was amazing!
Our tour guide (Lamb), was excellent very knowledgeable & entertaining. The food was some of the best that we have experienced in Saigon & the drinks were plentiful ( all alcohol was included).
We went to a lovely intimate music venue to hear two male singers accompanied by a violinist & pianist. I loved it & didn't want to leave. Next we went to a bar to hear a rock band. They were great & very entertaining. We drove through several districts of Saigon that we hadn't yet visited & our drivers were excellent- I felt very relaxed & comfortable in the crazy Saigon traffic. The four our tour went very quickly & we were sad but buzzing when it was over. If we had done this earlier in our trip, we would have definitely booked another Vespa tour...it was definitely a highlight of our holiday & I would fully recommend it to everyone.
Absolutely a must-do. We have spent ten days in Vietnam and this would have to have been a high point. We were a large group of mostly Aussies, most of us on the upper end of 60, with a smaller group in 30's (our next generation). Just as we were departing the heavens opened. It would have been easy to say we are cancelling. However despite it scaring the "something" out of most of us we headed out. It rained for the next hour but by then we had realised our drivers were extremely competent and very careful. (You do not know what traffic is until you have walked through Hanoi). And as for our guide (we love you Katty) her energy was infectious, her enthusiasm was catching, and her ability to communicate exceptional. This in itself made it well worth doing.
Added to that this was a really well constructed tour. Five stops, each of which provided us with a different foodie or music experience. Food was wonderful but added to by Katty's information about ingredients and how to put them together; we even managed a glass of reasonable wine at one of the dinner venues. And then the two music venues were fab, crossing the generations admirably. I have done this once, but I promise you if we are ever back in Saigon we will do it again. (Please Katty do not have moved to US before then). And thanks to my driver Bing who made me feel safe.
