I was tired of paying hundreds of dollars a night in Astana and now I have Altel 4G I don't have to worry about the quality of wifi to get work done. For a long time now my favourite Almaty taxi driver has been mentioning this place to me, so I thought I would try it. With a price of between KZT 8000 - 10000 per night what could go wrong? I had such low expectations that I was delighted with what I found. The place is central, just around the corner from the British Embassy in fact. There is a shopping centre near and some fast food joints. I also walked to my government meetings in 30 minutes in the snow and ice. The place is spotlessly clean, my room was 6.5mx6.5m with two large double beds. There were a few things that would upset the aesthete and the bathroom smelt of rotting carpets, although there was no carpet and it looked very clean. There was breakfast available but I did not try it. The staff were very friendly and, giving up on my poor Russian, to my surprise I spoke in French with one of the girls. This guest house is not really targeted at the international market but it is clean, safe, friendly and the price is the key selling point at around $50. We need more places like this in Astana.
