To call this establishment a hotel is vast overstatement. I have stayed in cheap hostels in India and Thailand that were much better. Disgusting is the only word to describe it, and it almost ruined my entire visit. I made a reservation one month before, having read reviews and having perused the website. All lies. The place was run by unprofessional, rude, chain smoking youths. The "hotel" is housed in 3 buildings that they walk you over to (the "reception" is in a travel agency). They presented me with a closet of a room above a greasy restaurant that did not have a light, telling me it would be fixed in a day or two. The hallway had a burnt out wall socket, and you could tell there were major wiring issues. I demanded a new room. They laughed in my face, as if a light was no big deal, and asked what the problem was. After 2 other rooms, I had to wait an hour, and they presented me with a room with a larger bed and a light. After they depositing me there, I discovered that there was one sheet on the bed - not two - no blanket, just a torn cheap bedspread, wires sticking out of the wall in several places (no TV as promised), AND the cherry on the cake -- cut hair all over the bathroom and a huge lump of it (and other disgusting things) in the toilet. I dragged the staff back up, and they proceeded to flush the toilet, and the water came up. They did nothing, said there was nothing to do, promising a different room in the morning. I couldn't use the bathroom all night (went to the slightly cleaner restaurant toilet), slept in my clothes, and in the morning (a very meager breakfast) nobody on staff was there to show me to another room. I marched out, went to tourist information, was recommended an area 2 short blocks away, and for 20 Euro more per night, I stayed in a perfectly clean, modern hotel. Don't go here. No matter what your budget. They are liars, and they laughed in my face when I called them on it. To make matters even worse, the pre-charged me for 4 nights, and although after trying numerous tactics they said they would call the bank to cancel the payment, I have yet to see evidence of it. Nightmare.

Room tip: Don't choose a room. This place is a horror.

The Sefa hotel is in a reasonable location on the old town in Istanbul, making it easy to get to the Blue Mosque, Ayasofia etc..but rooms are small, not very clean and look out onto a main road at the front. Staff tried very hard to sell us trips on our first night, ( they run a travel agency from the front room of the hotel) but left us alone after that. Don't think the sheets had been changed before we got to the room. Breakfast is in a nearby restaurant and we missed the notice on the first morning..

It is a bit hard to explain the mix feelings concerning my stay at this hotel since the experience is one of utter surrealism. On the one hand, it is superbly located close to the sea and just five to ten minutes from the blue mosque, Hagia Sofia, and the Arasta Bazaar with plenty of restaurants and supermarkets around for a nice meal or to buy some fruit, water or anything that one might need. The price for the rooms is also acceptable if location is taking into account. Probably the best of the hotel is the breakfast. It is simple, but nice and the senior couple that offers it - at a restaurant across the street - is nice and friendly. On the other hand, well, imagine that you are going to stay in a hotel which is managed by a bunch of 15 year old kids, nice grown up people, but nonetheless with the maturity of 15 years old and with no idea on how to run a hotel. The experience is exactly that. I have changed room several times until I got the room that was promised me when I made the reservations (I rotated among almost all the rooms in the hotel). The first time I took a shower, there was no drainage and the bathroom flooded. Amazingly, there is nobody at the reception for huge lengths of time and if you are expecting to find anyone at the reception before 10am or 11am then forget it. Either there is a "staff" crowd at the reception around the computer as if a bunch of friends getting together to see videos and play games or there is no one in sight. If you have problems the most incredible excuses are given: the air conditioner is not working - response: "open the window" or "you do not need it, besides you can catch a cold with it"; Most used response: "tomorrow". You arrive from a 10 hour bus trip at 7am and the guys arrive at 11am. Inquiring to this situation lead to the following answer "why did you not walked around the neighborhood?". Surreal answers like this and lack of problem solving are a frequent experience. Only one guy really make an effort, the others just sat making promises or stare at the computer waiting for you to leave. If you are unlucky to stay in the rooms next to the computer expect loud noises from movies that the staff is watching - no headphones are used. Replacement of toilet paper and cleaning of the rooms is irregular. Also, television and internet availability are also uncertain at best. The craziest thing about this is that one does not get overly upset with all of these things because one cannot really believe some of the answers and one can see that they are not doing it with ill intent. They are friendly and nice, but they have no concept of what managing a hotel entails...to me and to my girlfriend it was one of the most surreal and unbelievable hotel experiences of our lives.
If you want to stay in this hotel, I would not recommend a stay longer than a couple of days.
