Recommend to take water and some fruits with you as its take 2 hours to climb and one hour to come back and there is only one shop which sales each stuff very expensive.

We prepared for this journey about a month before we went for Umrah by doing random short climbs (running up and down the stars), evening runs, extra walking. It is always better to prepared a little more than to be caught off guard.

Best time = immediately after Fajr.
Ask the taxi driver to take you to the base of the mountain, the road at the base of the mountain is very steep.
Once at the top of the cave, the view of the k'aba is blocked by the clock tower.

A little preparation paid off really well. Many say the round trip takes about 2 hours, but because of our extra preparation, we were up and down in less than 90 minutes. By the time the sun started to heat up, we were already down and looking for a taxi back.

There are many beggars starting from about mid-point. Almost all of them seem to be from northwest Pakistan or Afghanistan. Avoid dressing as a westerner (i.e. jeans). My wife felt comfortable wearing a niqab because people stare. There was A LOT of trash all the way to the top, unfortunately. There were a few people that were cleaning it up, some others were building/repairing the stairs - take a moment to chat with those working and thank them for their service in cash or kind.

A common thing we heard as a couple is "Allah will give you a son" as a form of "blessing" in return for donations. This was extremely sad to see and hear because such concepts are pre-islamic, aka ignorance. Someone please ask what will happen if you end up having a girl? Will they return the donation?

This mountain has within it cave Hira. Cave Hira is where the first revelation of the Qur'an took place. As such this mountain has huge historical significance for Muslims. The silhouette of the mountain is unique and characteristic. I haven't yet climbed the mountain but plan to during future visits.
