I spent two months living here and this place made my stay. The location is fantastic, just off the Corniche and 10mins walk from Downtown, Hamra and AUB. While spartan, the rooms are large and never cold. The place is well equipped, with all the basic amenities and decent bathrooms. Bearing in mind that it is a 2 star hotel, it measures up very well and from what I saw around Beirut, it is the best value.
It is run by a family, and the two young brothers who manage it day-to-day are incredibly hospitable and friendly. They have become some of my best friends in Lebanon, and I was not suprised to realise how many of their local friends are ex-guests. They can organise just about anything, and give advice about everything from tours, to solo trips, to nights out and shopping. Both speak excellent English, and there is at least one Spanish speaker at the hotel, as well as some French spoken. I never had any sort of inconvenience that couldn't be helped, and a number of female travellers I spoke to commented that the hotel feels very safe.
I will never stay at another hotel in Beirut, and I'm not alone in this view.
P.S. For the person who is upset about not being permitted to bring someone upstairs, you will find that it is the law in Lebanon, aimed at preventing crime. The hotel can be fined or closed for permitting non-guests in rooms.
