Seoul's metro system is convenient and covers a large area, however in my experience it is almost always crowded, and this isn't helped by the fact that train frequency is very low. Once the train arrives the platform is bursting with people.
Sundays were the only days when trains were not very packed, but they weren't empty either, and the frequecy of trains also seemed to diminish.
When compared to Hong Kong I found Seoul's metro system lacking.
If you are going anywhere in a hurry factor in some extra minutes because the metro, though quick, will take a while to arrive to your station. And if the carriage is packed you may have to wait for the next train.
This metro system is very efficient, and most places are near a station. Unlike Melbourne's myki system you get your money back when finished with the ticket, but I kept one ticket as a souvenir. I used it from the Incheon airport and also to find the Salvation Army church.
Seoul Metro is an inexpensive, convenient and clean way to get around Seoul. Even from the airport. Highly recommend. Get a T-Money card from a vending machine and top it up - you can also use it to pay for other things in convenience stores.
I highly recommend the very convenient train system of Seoul, and Korea as a whole! It was such an experience and other countries should learn how Korea had their train system so efficient.
Very clean, efficient & extensive network Metro. Stations are huge, with extensive walking & stairs climbing for transfers. Seoul Station itself is super huge - like a mini underground city. Some stations do not have escalators , so you need to lug your heavy luggages up & down many stairs. Limited lifts are available, but very small ( & meant for elderly, pregnant women, wheelchair bound, etc). Of course one can use it if carrying heavy luggages. We have visited Korea many times & in our opinion, we always felt that the stations are not user friendly for travellers esp with luggages. Long queues & long wait to take limited small lifts, which you have to share with the mentioned locals group. Also there are no station counters if you need help or make enquiries. Many years ago, every station has a counter, but no more. Keep enough small notes for topping up cards.
