We had a great experience going to the Saqqara pyramids with our guides. Seeing the oldest stone building on the planet was incredible. This was also the first sight we visited on our tour that we saw hieroglyphs up close and personal.

Saqqara necropolis is not to be missed, and is preferable to visit before the Giza Pyramids. The place is huge and should be visited early in the morning to avoid intense heat. There are several archeological structures in different states of ruins. The notable ones are : Step Pyramid of Djoser, Pyramid of Unas, Pyramid of Sekhemket among others. One must appreciate the genius of the architect Imhotep who came out with the concept building stepped pyramids, a prototype for more famous Giza pyramids, by stacking 6 Mastabas on top of one another. One can also admire the inside of one of the pyramids (Unas) by going down a long narrow pathway. This one has beautiful hieroglyphics and paintings, in contrast to inside of Giza pyramids which does not have any. On none of the wall carvings of another structure, one can see a baby Hippo being born and an alligator waiting behind to take his chance!

At Saqqara be sure to see the Serapeum and the Unas pyramid as well as the step pyramid. The Serapeum is an underground burial vault containing over 20 enormous granite sarcophagi each weighing tens of tons and manufactured perfectly and polished. How they got them in there is a mystery because they barely fit through the passageways. Unbelievably impressive.

Very nice windy and small but a lot to see here. There’s slot to see but it’s terrible hot and one of the tombs is very tight to get into. It’s so interesting what they have built.
