To start with, when my husband and I got dropped off at the hotel, the taxi driver told us we were in the 'dodgy end of town' which didn't fill me with high hopes.
When we checked in and got taken to our room by the staff member, we were told to put our bags on the floor in the room so he could 'show us the balcony'. Firstly, it was a balcony only big enough for one person, I didn't need to be shown it. Secondly, he left the door to our room open and our bags within easy access, so I didn't go onto the balcony, waited inside the room to keep an eye on the bags. He kept insisting that I come over to the balcony which made me more suspicious as if he had a friend waiting to steal something.
After he left we checked the beds out and they were so filthy we ended up sleeping in our sleeping bags on top of the bed (we had come prepared for camping in Tanzania luckily!)
The shower was so small I could barely move inside it. And I'm not a big girl, only 170cm and 65kgs so good luck if you are any bigger than that!
We went to reception to ask about where to buy water and were told there was a shop down the road so on our very small walk (we didn't make it to the shop they were talking about as we were so scared walking around in the area as everyone kept staring at us and walking very close behind us). We were gone about 10mins max and that night when I was looking through my bags I discovered I had $30 Australian Dollars stolen from my bag. I had it hidden in a small pouch in the side of my backpack. So very scared that someone went through our things in the 10-15mins we were out!!
That night I was crying asking my husband what we were doing staying in this place! We put a chair under the door handle that night so we could sleep safely without anyone trying to come into the room (my greatest fear!).

The only thing this hotel had going for it was the food. The first night we ordered pasta meals which were very cheap and really yummy. The breakfast each morning was really nice too, traditional Egyptian food.
However, the main dining area near the reception just smelt like cigarette smoke and engine oil (from the motor running the fridges). It wasn't a pleasant stay at all...

King Hotel is located closer to the river Nile, closer to most of the places of interest in Cairo. The rooms are in good condition and everything works perfectly. Just as you expect out of a good hotel. There is nothing fancy about the hotel, it has a good restaurant that serves decent food and staff are helpful.

We stayed here at the start of our tour and at the end. Our second room was definitely better than the first one. The staff are so helpful - but can they check that the TV, the shower, lights and 'fridge work before we arrive? OK, so all these were solved soon, but after a long day's travel - you don't want the hassle. Cleanliness was average for this type of hotel in this area.
The rooftop restaurant is quite good and beers are a reasonable price. Again, the service was good, and the guys helpful and smiling.
Very near a supermarket if you want to buy snack lunches or water etc.

Room tip: Once you've booked in - check everything in the rooms works !!

We stay twice in kings hotel, in the begging and in the end of the trip. They have a amazing bar in the rooftop, nice beer, deinks and shisha. The two rooms we stayed where different qualit, one was nice, the other was good! Compared to the usual medium hotel quality in Cairo, Kings Hotel is a very nice one!

This hotel is absolutely recommendable! We stayed at king cairo hotel for more than a week in the beginning of August 2014.

Pos: We had a spacious triple room on the 7th floor with a great view of the political party al Wafds head quarter. The room was really clean and nice with comfortable beds and was cleaned everyday. The hotel is within 5-min walk from the metro station, supermarkets, restaurants, cinema etc. at Tahrir street and less than 10 minutes walk to the nile. The hotel is in a nice and safe area and is located close to mohandeeseen, Zamalek etc. where there are really nice cafes, restaurants, the cultural center al Sawy etc. The rooftop cafe was absolutely superb! The view from the cafe is amazing! The cafe serves alcohol, shisha as well as lovely food to great prices (much cheaper than going to cafes in Zamalek) and is open until 2 or 3 in the morning. It is absolutely the most perfect place to unwind after a trip around the city. The cafe and lobby has free wifi which worked all the time. The staff and service was beyond the best we ever had! The staff were really nice and helpful 24/7.

Cons: The only thing negative about the hotel is the breakfast. Eventhough we knew it was standard breakfast (boiled eggs, toast, jam, butter, kidney beans etc) it really was terrible. We only ate the breakfast twice. But the good thing is there are great cafees in the neighbourhood were you can get lovely breakfast at affordable prices.

There were both students, groups of friends, families, couples and single travellers staying at the hotel. If you are looking for a clean and safe place to stay where most things are within walking distance or 5-10 minutes away in a taxi or with the metro then you should deffinitely stay at King cairo hotel. We will definitely come back!
