I stayed at the Zayed with 2 friends in mid-January, as part of a tour. The hotel staff could not have been more helpful or more friendly - bags were carried by an army of smartly dressed porters, the reception manager ordered taxis, changed money, booked extra nights, and direct edme to a police station (to report a previous theft) kindly and competantly despite my awful Arabic! The rooms were lovely and luxurious compared to previous experiences- clean, comfortable big bed, big en-suite bathrooms with hot water and satellite tele. View of garden squares and decorated in fun Pharoanic designs. Friendly waitor kept us entertained in evening with matchstick gameswhile we smoked sheesa. Also, as rest of Cairo, exceptional good value.
Cairo is wonderful- so different & spiritual, bustling & crazy. PLEASE, just don't be one of these snooty Lonely Planet travellers that argues over EVERY taxi fare and haggles over 50p (it's £2 for a journey across Cairo for Christ's sake). Give tips generously - it is nothing to usand means everything to them.
