Owner description: Once a summer retreat for emperors, this 290-acre park is still a retreat for the crowd-weary tourist, who can relax here or stroll around ancient pavilions, mansions, temples, bridges and huge lake, stopping occasionally at a shop or tea-house.

The summer palace is one of the top places to visit while in Beijing, with that being said it is also an extremely crowded spot during the spring holiday. When visiting do not expect to receive the royal treatment. The bathrooms are few and far between and not well maintained. The food is scattered in small stalls and restaurants which will overcharge. Be sure to bring your own food and water when visiting and be ready to walk a lot. The main entrance will take you around the lake while the other entrance will take you up and through the mountain so be sure to check before you enter if you are not up for the uphill climb. Still, it is an amazing place with lots of history and a must see place in Beijing.

Spent maximum 45 there and left. It is pretty place but extremely overcrowded. People are everywhere, in some places you have to “q” just to cross to the other side.
If you want to visit this place I would recommend to go early morning or in the evening and try to avoid going there during weekends.

The Summer Palace is definitely a must-see in Beijing. It used to be the summer retreat of the emperor and empress, although apparently at one point the emperor was actually imprisoned here and literally walled into his living quarters by the empress. The main site, to the north of the part, consists of several temples and the living quarters. In some buildings there are displays of antique furniture and the rooms have been laid out as they would have been at the time.
Do walk further around the lake though, particularly along the eastern shore from where you can walk across the beautiful seven-arched bridge to a small island with more pretty pagodas and a temple.
Visited February 2016 (during the Chinese new year holiday so pretty crowded, not as bad as other attractions though).

A bold reminder of the opulence of emperors and dynasties. Tranquillity at bay but only for the elite of days gone by.beautifully kept!
