Have heard about this restaurant for some time and read numerous rave reviews about it, so were really excited to give it a try. We're real foodies and were looking forward to something new and exciting. The "industrial" interior was gorgeous but this look is getting -way- overdone in Hong Kong now. The staff were very attentive and helpful. But unfortunately, the food just didn't live up to all the 5 star reviews and the hype. The disappointment started when we discovered they only had two, completely unknown vodkas and no premium brands like Grey Goose or Belvedere. The bread was nice but the two unique herb butters were so-so. The smoked eggplant starter was visually interesting, but the blue cheese, walnut and eggplant combination just didn't do anything for us. The scallops were a serious disappointment. They were completely smothered in a not pleasant tasting shiso, sake, yuzu and miso butter. The mixture was like burnt breadcrumbs which completely overpowered and overwhelmed the taste of the delicate Hokkaido scallops. For the main we ordered the half portion of lamb rack because most of the interesting main dishes are huge and meant for several people or groups. There were only two of us so we had to go with the lamb as it was one of the few dishes that came in a smaller portion. The lamb was properly cooked, but had a strange smokey taste and half of the order (see photo) was pure fat. Rhoda is probably better for larger groups where you can order the more interesting specialty dishes and try a wider variety, but unfortunately, despite wanting to find a dish we could love and that matched the decor and service, it wasn't meant to be. Much better options in Sai Ying Pun or Kennedy Town.

Really enjoyed our evening at Rhoda last night. We were 2 couples dining. The menu was interesting. For a table of 4 we had 4 smaller plates and 3 larger plates and that was plenty. Special shout out to the pork shoulder with kimchi and the chicken ragu pasta made with chicken livers (I think). Very tasty and they were the more reasonably priced larger plates. The rest were $400++ per dish. We had gin & tonics to start, brought a bottle with us & had a bottle of white. Meal came to approx $550 per person, decent for Hong Kong.

Gotta LOVE Rhoda and HOW does Chef Nate continue to do it so well, night after night?
Last night I was tired and hungry, so dropped into Rhoda, asked to sit at the Chef's table - corner near the appetiser prep station so I could watch the beautiful creations in formation! What a show - not only are the smells delicious, but the speed and action is the best! Even though I was solo, I was very well attended to, buy several of the team, and Chef Nate dropped by twice to see how I was going... thanks again Nate ( see you in Singapore in Sept)
I enjoyed the Hamgutchi on beetroot with some squeezed cheese sauce, then sampled the special spicy pork shoulder that really had a kick, not for the shy but again, fairly delicate if you love Asian fusion cuisine!!
Finished with a lemon and fresh berries, that was a fab finish to my evening...all in 45 minutes of satisfying, entertaining, and fulfilling dining experience at RHODA!!
A MUST GO in Sai Ying Pun, and one of several really terrific places that are happening in the local area.
Well done Chef Nate & Team!!

I'll be back again, next month for sure - but hey - YOU tell me how YOU enjoyed it when you visit, OK??

Since the MTR opened up the Western line, great Manhattan/Ginza quality restaurants are popping up everywhere. In the rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods of the old Western District, Rhoda is a gem. It's a Yardhouse quality Western restaurant in a location better known for salted fish stores. It sits close to a budget-business hotel like the Best Western. It serves drinks out of a full service bar with FOUR bar tenders. The menu features grilled and Australian flavors. Competent, tasty, and not overly fussy. Kind of like the service, too.

So yes, this is one of the reasons to start hanging out in Western. Hong Kong could use more restaurants like this.

Quality of food is top notch! You're paying for what you get, and the meal doesn't come cheap. Plus if you're there as a couple and one who enjoys the theatrics of cooks around the open kitchen preparing these awesome dishes, choose to sit at the bar.
