Chungking Mansions is a budget destination, its not exactly 5 star and you get what you pay for. But even here there are standards and what I stayed in was a third world slum probably considered so in some of the worst depths of the third world let alone Hong Kong.

They originally tried asking for $800 a night, after walking away the guy chased me into the street eventually coming down to $400. Given how late it was and how difficult it is to find hotels in Hong Kong on a Friday night I gave in. What I got was horrific. The place stank, was full of stains, rust, suspect electrics, non functioning AC which may have never been serviced. A stained bed with non linen, cigarette burns on the pillow, no bedding over than a single sheet and the "ensuit bathroom" was sealed off with cardboard and gaffer tape.

Stay clear of this place, there are guest houses in Chungking offering rates of $100-200 a night which are basic but far superior to this hell hole. Thankfully Hong Kong pharmacies willingness to sell strong sleeping pills over the counter made it possible to sleep an evening.
