The jeep ride to the "base" of Mt Merapi was better then expected and quite interesting.

Our driver/guide took us to this jeep hire place- it was a good choice. Our jeep driver was knowledgeable, had good sense of humor and did not rush us. At the end he drove up an incline ramp(?) and parked close to the edgy. (this really scared our friend's wife!) and took lots of photos of us and the jeep with Merapi in background. They provide masks for the dusty journey.

The trip was well planned- though very bumpy the duration of each leg was ok. We stopped at mini museum to view a home that was heavily damaged by 2010 eruption. Final stop was to the site of the bunker made to protect from ash and hot gases. Unfortunately lava also flowed down to the bunker and two died- one can only imagine. After viewing Mt Merapi in the far distance we had tea/coffee/crackers at the vendors.

Timing the occurrences of pass eruptions the next one is scheduled for 2018.

Near the bunker is a kiosk with 4 large very tamed owls and for small fee one can get your photo taken with them. If you are into raptors you can have them perched on your arm/shoulder and with a gesture they fly back to their roost.

Worth a trip as introduction to Merapi. But if bumpy rides don't agree with you better skip.

My kids love this as the the ride on the jeep was like a roller coaster, really bumper and wild

Ladies, hhmm, I suggest you wear your sports bra instead

We booked the short trip, the cheapest trip and no regrets. Too much bumps really gave me some good shakes in the insides

Today we climbed Mt. Merapi. We used the company named Bima Tours, we payed 450K/person (including transport, entrance fee, guide, head lamp, breakfast, water). We started around 1am, we made it to the top around 5:30. Listen, what other people here say - it's not an easy track. We had perfect weather (warm, 0 rain, almost no wind) and still only half made it to the top. In 8kms you go 1,5 km up. The track is very steap, difficult, uneven and basically you are going up all the time for 4,5hours. If you are fit and you don't over do it at the begging you should be able to make it. The amazing views arw worth every ounce of your sweat and pain. The way down for me was even worse then the way up. But still it's one of the most amazing things I did in my life :)

Awesome landscape when we reached the peak. The journey was not an easy one due to the cool weather and dusty condition. Strong wind blowing through the night when we started our journey up. Make sure you are well prepared.

Try not to bring many stuffs with you beside warm cloths, jacket, glove, sufficient water, face mask (sandy), wet tissue and a good hiking shoe.

We are lucky to have guides with us when we were down the hill as too rough with rocky trek which easily slip. Good if you can get ready with hiking stick.

We went for sunrise trip, leaving hotel at 10pm then start the hike at 1am for sunrise around 5.30am. Stay at the peak for an hour then started to move down. Package is included breakfast, simple banana pancake with coffee/tea. Reached hotel at 12pm.

Unforgettable and exciting Jeep journey. No suitable for children < 12 years old, senior citizen, especially women in pregnancy. Pls bring along the sun glasses and mask to avoid volcanic ash.
