To catch the sunrise, you need to start your trip towards the mountain at 4am by riding a jeep...the road is challenging but worth it...don’t forget to wear sweater because it can be chilling when you reach the top...we are lucky because the weather is nice and we can see both the sunrise and the top of the mountain...if you are lucky, your jeep driver can be an amazing photographer like us...we feels like we are doing the magazine photoshoot

We have done this tour on 3rd Sept 2017. Heading to Selo, Boyolali, Central Java, where the basecamp located in, from Yogyakarta at 10PM. We did this tour with Kresna tour agency. They managed everything from the transport, guide and light breakfast. The driver picked us up at Sheraton hotel where we stay, and heading to Selo. Arriving at 11.30PM, we had some time to chill and prepare at the basecamp since we started to climb at 1 AM.
We went there with a minibus with 6 participants. This basecamp (looks like a homestay or something because they have some rooms) also offered us a cup of tea or coffee (free, included in this tour). Here is a place where other participants from different bus also gathered.
At 1 AM, we start to climb. From the basecamp, we walked and passed the local houses, a straight road which is up, is the beginning. it is about 2 KM. This road condition is fine, asphalt. Afterward, we passed local field which mainly tobacco and vegetables. Soil road. Next part, we started to climb to first point "Taman Nasional Gunung Merapi" or Mt Merapi National Park. Then, Pos 1 or "1st Post", Pos 2 or 2nd Post, Pos 3 or 3rd Post or called Pasar Bubrah. There is a wooden pavilion / small house to take some rest in Post 1 and Post 2. You can build a tent in Post 3 or Pasar Bubrah. It is flat area beforw we climb to the peak. At 5 AM we arrived at Post 3. And at 6 AM we reach the peak.
My summary is from the basecamp until the peak there is no flat trek. From basecamp to the local field is asphalt road, after then sandy trek until Post 2. From Post 2 until Post 3 is a mixture of sand, small stone and big stone. Post 3 is flat area with sand and stone. Post 3 to the peak is sandy, rocky, and dusty.
There is no water sources, so bring enough water. I brought 3 litre and it was enough. It was quite cold and foggy in the night, even in the Post 3 it's so cold and windy. When we go down in the morning, It was getting hot and sunny. Bring proper trekking shoes, warm clothes (light and quick dry), enough water, some energy bar, since it was soo exhausting ( especially for people who don't workout regularly like me, although I did exercise a week before climbing).
In the end, all of your struggles will be paid off with the view from the peak. Sooo amazing. We can see clearly MT Merbabu which is close to Mt Merapi ( if you want to climb Mt merbabu, you start from the same basecamp, which is Selo, Boyolali), Mt Sumbing and Mt Sindoro.
At 7.30 AM we go down. At 8.30 AM we reach Post 1. And at 11AM we were heading back to Yogyakarta with the same shuttle, after we had banana pancake and coffee at the basecamp. At 1 PM we arrived at hotel.
Superb view always come along with hard effort !
As a bonus : we met a big group of monkeys around 15 monkeys. They seemed familiar with human, I mean they didn't attack us, even when we passed them in several meters. Don't forget to bring a hat !

there were many basecamps providing jeep touring the price about 350K for a short trip. they will show you the place where they experiencing the eruption. the way to getting also awakening. people here are nice and simple. unluckily we couldnt see the peak of merapi due to fog. overall its a place that worth to visit in Yogjakarta.

We opted for the Mt Merapi lava jeep tour as we didn't have enough days in Jogja to hike. The breathtaking views of the majestic Mt Merapi was definitely worth the trip! Bring a light outerwear if you're going for sunrise as the temperature could dip below 18deg c even during summer.

Awesome jeep ride
A jeep cost about 350k to 450k Rupiah, so if you go with more people, more worth it
The road up is soooo bumpy, and dusty
But a very good experience

The view is also magnificent.
