“A beautiful serene gem discovered”
Review of Navalas Church

Navalas church is the oldest building on Guimaras, built by the local residents at the end of the 19th century and restored with the assistance of the European Union nations. The Philippines has many churches but this one is particularly attractive as there was literally no one there so the atmosphere was particularly serene. Its a short distance from the Lopez Mansion at Roca Encantada and well worthwhile to while away some time within its walls.

Navalas Church according to our trisikad (tricycle) driver cum tour guide, is the "most beautiful church" in Guimaras. It's a small church but the atmosphere is so serene that you can even hear the chirping of birds -- like they are singing praises to God.

Beside the church is an Elementary School and the teachers and parents there are quite friendly and kind enough to let us empty our bladder.

NOTE: When you want to tour the island, the trisikad is a good choice for up to 4 people and it will cost you PHP 1500 if you will cover the farthest point which is Guisi Lighthouse. If not, it is only Php 1200 per trip.
Remember to bring raincoat as well if you are visiting the area during rainy season. And please put on insect repellent and sunblock lotion.

It was a company team building, after we checked out at the resort
we had this as one of our side trips.

The caretaker said it dates back to 1880, you can see the evidence
by those big limestone pillars and altar. It's on a hilly portion and ice fields
as a background. Good for photo ops too.

No entrance, hey it's a church! should be none :)

The old stone Navalas Church of Navalas, Buenavista on the northern part of Guimaras island-province is the only existing Spanish heritage church in the island...It is enclosed by some sort of a stone fortress with a wide watch tower/bell tower as its gate....As we approached its gate we were awed by the wide greenery surrounding the church....The atmosphere is both serene, silent and secluded..the area being surrounded by rice fields and tall trees...there were very few houses nearby (its true to the rest of the island)....If somebody needs solitude to meditate and pray, I guess this would be the place..............We hired a tricycle to reach the place from the town of Jordan..its about a 30 minute ride along well;-paved roads and wide open fields and forested areas....
