“Funicular Train is a good way to descend, great views!”

My idea was to ride the funicular RR down the hill and take pictures as the sun was setting, however that was not to be. The last train down is at 7:30pm which was well before the summer sunset time, so keep in mind this isn't a good option for seeing g the sunset atop the hill. Still, the descent was crazy fun to do as I was able to get a spot in the very front car and see the city and views unobstructed. Also, plan for extra time to ride the funicular - it seems to be quite a bit more popular than the cable cars. I waited about 30 minutes in line to go down, while my cable car ascension was no wait at all.
I loved the old rickety feel of the train, but all was safe and sound so no concerns at all. A well marked entrance to easily find this spot and also food and the vendors in the area.

The Funicular is one of the ways you can get to San Cristobal Mirador. I have opted for getting there by funicular and descend by cable car. Definitely worths the extra money. The funicular stops at the zoo station also before reaching the top of the mountain but this was not of any interest for me. There are lots of things to do at the top: enjoy the views, grab a churro or pray in the church located nearby. There are also souvenir shops and on the other side of the hill you have the cable car ("teleferico"). The views of the city are fantastic and I do recommend this activity whenever you want to see the best views of the city.

We stayed overnight in Santiago at the start of our trip to Chile and were in the Lastarria area. We could walk through the Parque Forestal to the Funicular which took us straight the the top of Cerro San Cristóbal - the views were amazing and a really good thing to do if you have a short time in the city.

Great unique experience. Fantastic funicular ride on an antique mode of transport and the best views of the city and the Andes when you get up there.

Could have done without all the crosses and religious paraphernalia at the top littering the place but there is a large area to walk around on nearly all sides to get the most spectacular views of the city.

If you are interested in the ride itself get the box at the top of the car as you can see the other car coming down half way and passing at the passing area where the track doubles up. For views of the city as you go up some through the trees probably better off in the bottom box but you can see through from each box over the roof of the one below anyway.

Cafes and toilets at the top, although we fancied a beer and couldn't see one just soft drinks.

Go on, get to the top, enjoy a mote con huesillo and catch the sunset.
BEWARE of pickpocketing during summer. And do not forget to ask the time for the last funicular, it's so sunny during the afternoon that you might get caught up in the moment and end up walking all the way down.

It's a good service, safe and family friendly
