Stayed here 3 days in Sept, found the staff very helpful, great location and even went for a drink with other guests with the owner, which was a laugh. Split is a lovely little town I would recommend it especially in the old town centre.

We stayed here for 3 nights during our journey up the coast of Croatia, and as a backpacker you can't ask for anymore. Has all the facilities you need and the location you can't beat, being located in the middle of the old town. However the best thing about this hostel is the owner, Al.

Great ...Stayed here three nights with me boyfriend, really enjoyed it. We got loads of info about the islands and what to do and where to go in Split. Also what places that are scams and not go to. Its a small place so everyone is friendly and you can hang out in the kitchen chatting over a beer. We both loved it would stay again.

We stayed here for 3 days in August and the place was really buzzing. Great easygoing vibe had some really good times here. One evening Al got everyone together and about 10 of us went to Als local bar. and another time a bunch of us were playing cards and having a beer in the kitchen before we all went to some aussie pub nearby. I really liked that I felt at home here and got to know a great bunch of people, thanks Al and Ivana

This is a hard review to score because we stayed in the studio apartment rather than the hostel itself.
Our first impressions weren't that positive of the hostel (rather than the studio) when we waited to check in. Maybe we caught Al on a bad day but he certainly wasn't that "welcoming" and "amazing" and merely functioned as someone who uncomfortably told us about the local area before shooing us out the hostel to clear up. He was quite obtuse regarding normal chat and did not want me to quickly check my email on the ancient computer (which I used because the WiFi there was so slow it was unusable, as complained by other guests). The person I travelled with got a look into the hostel rooms when she used the toilet and she said she was not impressed.
We were then whisked away by Al's very friendly and hospitable wife who was lovely to us, chatty, kind and as helpful as can be. She lives above the studio apartment we stayed in and broke the door down for us one night when the deadbolt locked itself!
The apartment itself was lovely and although small, had a very cosy feel about it. The weather there hit 45C and the fan provided found a permanent place near the bed. Only concerns include a lack of freezer, hot water (at all- there was no hot tap) in the kitchen or kettle. There was also something of an ants nest near the sink which meant the dishes had lots of ants all over them. The WiFi was also described on arrival by Al in the studio as being "very slow and not to rely on it". All I can say is remove it from your list of amenities provided by the hostel if it is useless! (and it was very hard to check the emails whilst in the studio). The WiFi itself wasn't slow, the router just wasn't in a place where signal could be received easily, resulting in you having to stand in particular spots to get the signal.
The place overall was cheap and didn't bother us too much as we were used to roughing it with hostels. What did put us off though was Al. Maybe we were spoilt by such fantastic hosts/owners in other places we stayed on our trip but Al was unwelcoming and lacked the relaxed, happy feeling we had at other places! Also, having not actually stayed in the hostel, don't take my word as gospel but from the 30 mins we stayed in the reception area, we were far from impressed.

Room Tip: Studio apartment definitely seemed like the best option.
