We really enjoyed our stay in Split at the Villa Varos. We let Joanne know when we would be arriving so that she could expect us, and she met us promptly and showed us to our room. She also kindly reassured us that we had parked our rental car legally (we found the parking situation in Split to be very confusing!) We were impressed with the room, which included a large bathroom. The bed was very comfortable. The location is tucked away on a side, residential street, very close to Diocletian's Palace and also close to the ferry terminal. I really enjoyed our location and felt like we had a much more genuine, personal experience than we would have had if we stayed in a larger, more formal hotel.

Villa Varos has a lot of character and is an excellent value. I highly recommend staying here if you want to experience Split like a local.

My husband and I have just returned from a trip to Croatia where we stayed in Villa Varos. We arrived at Villa Varos late at night with a view of staying in Split and getting a ferry the next day. Upon arrival at Villa Varos, there was a note on the day saying that reception would be closed until 9pm. At 9.25pm we were still waiting in the laneway outside the hotel with all of our baggage having endured a long flight and keen to check in. Eventually I used my mobile to call the owner who told me her son was around the area and would check us in. I thought this was ok and didn't think too much of it, however this was basically the way things went for our entire stay. The son then took us to the wrong room and we walked in on some poor man laying in bed at which time her son swore and left us standing there whilst he went to find the correct keys. Very uncomfortable all round. After finding the right room, we finally settled in and the rooms are actually very nice, clean and quiet. The next morning I went downstairs to thank the owner for arranging to let us in and confirm that their check out policy was at 11am. At 10.20am as we were trying to pack and organize ourselves, we received a knock on our door and it was the son who was asking us to leave asap so that he could dri ve someone to the airport. We got to the desk only to find all guests had been asked to check out early. We left our bags in their reception as our ferry wasnt until 2pm and told the son we would be back at 1pm at which he agreed that would be fine and he would be there. Again, we were waiting at the door until 1.20pm and had to call the owner so that we could rescue the bags and try to make the ferry.
This was the first place we had stayed in Croatia. I did find that with the villas/apartments the reception is not open during the day and therefore we probably should expect less and be prepared to lock in hard and fast times with the owner. However we did go on to stay at other Apartments where the Owners were fantastic and we had no problems at all. It was a shame that the service here wasn't great as the rooms are actually quite big and very clean. The location was very good. I did get the feeling that running this hotel was not a priority for the Son and he was completely not interested and at times quite rude. We did go back to Split and decided not to return to Villa Varos - it was just too hard to try and be a guest there!

Villa Varos is in a lovely location very handy for Riva and old town. The hotel location is quiet, we were there for a week and only time it was noisy was when there were groups of guests yapping in stairwell! The hotel is very small - 8 rooms, feels more like a guest house, there is no bar or restaurant and a small reception which is not always manned - when it's locked make sure you have the hotels number as the one above the door is wrong. The staff (owners son) was very helpful and would come straight back if you called him, he also met us at 10pm on a sat night as we were delayed (airport bus took over an hour to depart!). The hotel is clean and modern. It's ideal for a short stopover, we were there a week and the lack of places to put your clothes was a pain, no drawers and the wardrobe had no rail. Overall if you are looking for something clean and simple this is it, at 69 E a night I would say it was a bit steep for what it was but it was pleasant enough.

We stayed here with two other couples in April. We found the rooms clean, basic and reasonably comfortably. The address was a little hard to find as the access tunnel across the headland was closed and the GPS did not want to go any other way. There does not seem to be a full-time receptionist, but when you ring the number on the front door a staff member appears fairly quickly.

Villa Varos was full when we inquired, but we were offered an apartment upstairs from a little restaurant in the family, Knoba Leut. It was an even better location, and we got the top level room with a balcony with a sea view. However, the management at Villa Varos is unorganized, brought the wrong key (or tried to pass us off onto a dark tiny room?). We were happy there, and thought it a bargain, charming in the old stone fisherman's quarter, only a couple of blocks from Diocleatians Palace/old town.
