Review of Butoiul de Aur - CLOSED

Butoiul de Aur
Price range: RM 5 - RM 67
Description: Welcome to the oldest restaurant in Romania! Located on the border between the Upper Town and the Lower Town, dating back to 1542, the Golden Barrel lingers amid buildings with authentic medieval architecture in this beautiful place called The Stairs Passage. We invite you to enjoy the original medieval design, typical of the fourteenth century, like an old castle, which impresses with opulence hosted by massive walls plated with stone and hard wood furniture that, for a few hours, will lead you into the old days of somptuos feasts. Therefore, we fondly welcome you into this well-known place for its delicious food, restaurant where Voivode Michael the Brave himself dined before leaving for the battle of Şelimbăr. Immerse yourself in the scenery and atmosphere of our restaurant where there are still stories to be told and also many blessed feasts.

Enjoyed a great lunch with friends at the end of July. Had starters, soups and finished wit some heavy traditional food. The food was delicious, the atmosphere and interior were fabulous. Unfortunately the terrace was full and the interior restaurant did not have air conditioning and the few servers were running around like crazy trying to keep up. We ended up waiting about 45 min for our food but enjoyed a great conversation and drinks as we waited.in the end the food was delicious so it was well worth it.

We ate outside as it was a warm evening. I had trout and my mum had chicken with apples and pineapples, and I had a tomato salad, all were good. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Nice spot with beautiful buildings all around. Would definitely recommend.

Located across the metal bridge of the small square to the rear of the church down a flight of steps in the old town you find this restaurant with a very simple entrance. Inside it goes back under the buildings and steps. This is a typical Romanian restaurant serving Romanian cuisine. We found the service was fast and the food hot and reasonable in portion size. It has a very cosy friendly atmosphere.

We arrived late in the evening and used the terrace outside. The food was delicious (we especially recommend the chicken with pineapple and the Mihai Viteazul salty pancakes), the service was great, the atmosphere nice and cozy. Totally worth it!
