I stayed at Villa Maly for 3 nights with my wife during our visit of Luang Prabang, and I don't think I could have choose a better place. The hotel is very nice, staff very friendly (but I think everyone is friendly in Laos), nice pool and free Wi Fi in the rooms.
It is a Boutique hotel style, with the Lobby and a small bar in the main historical house and few others buildings, located around the pool. The Pool itself was much appreciated after the long (and hot) days walking around Luang Prabang. I really enjoyed walking around hotel in the garden in the evening, very relaxing.
We only used the restaurant for Breakfast, which was included in the rate and while I wouldn't call it the best breakfast I have ever had, I really can't complain about the quality nor the quantity.
The room was nice and clean, and, as expected from other comments I read from other Trip Advisor members, the bathroom was not on the large side, but unless you are planning to stay for a month or to spend your vacations in the bathroom... it does the job.
In regards of the rates, I am surprised to read all the previous comments about the hotel being overpriced, as I got a pretty good rate on their website, where they had a promotion for last minute bookings with 25% discount. Comparing their rates with similar category hotels, they seem to be ok. But of course you shouldn't even think of comparing it with some guest house that you can find around.... We actually stayed in a Guest House for $35 a night in Vientiane, and while I can't complain about the price .... never again....
The hotel is located less than 5 minutes walking distance from the Main street (where most of the restaurants are) and the Night Market, so very convenient and easy to go around. While we have been walking most of the time, you can get a tuck tuck for about $1.5 per person or rent a bicycle.
I also recommend to go on their boat (Nava Mekong) for a dinner cruise (I saw that they also do lunch cruise to Pak Ou caves, but we didn't use it. The dinner was great, Lao style, with many different dishes (I loved the Mekong sea weed), the cruise was much enjoyable and relaxing, with amazing sunset, and in the end a show with local women, dancing and singing. All that for about $30 per person.
