Like many former expats I tend to be wary of buffets (in fact I usually avoid them) as unhappy experiences have suggested that they do not offer such good vfm as one might think. However, during a recent stay at the Jeddah Hilton I found myself unable to summon up the effort to clean up after a daylong construction site visit and find somewhere nice to eat. I decided to brave the Al Safina buffet offering - and was very pleasantly surprised. This was an excellent meal!
Starting with a very nice offering of cold starter dishes (including anchovies which I love), I put together a plate which very much resembled the product of the old, much missed hors d'oeuvre trolley. The Insalata Tricolere was particularly good as was the carpaccio of beef. I then tried the mushroom soup which was OUTSTANDING, creamy, slightly garlicky and tasting of freshly gathered mushrooms. Main courses were more than adequate - I put together a plate of Middle Eastern specialities which was very enjoyable. There were some interesting cold desserts - I had a very nice cherry and cream concoction. The one let down was the cheese trolley which offered only two Italian varieties; one blue cheese and one smoked - very disappointing.
Probably the best buffet meal I've had since one in the Hong Kong Hotel.
