The Galleria Residence

Reviewed 15 January 2016

Staying in the Galleria apartments, long term. Has 4 bedrooms max, penthouses available. Has a homely feel to it. From the UK, carpet definitely has a nice home touch as laminate is quite cold, with constant AC on would definitely get cold. Though can have other types of floor too I believe. Smallish though reasonable sized kitchen with electric hobs/ovens. Everything provied for, from toasters to bedding to towels to irons to cutlery. Though can use your own. House keeping twice a week, clean everything top to bottom and change bedding towels etc. Average bathroom, though small bath with a fitted shower, is hard for anyone taller than 5ft 5", have to bend a little to get under shower.
Not modern or stylish, mahogany doors and furniture. Needs updating but is comfortable. Relatively clean, but not 5*, but to be expected as deep cleans aren't too regular.
Shared terrace upstairs, relatively ok with sunbeds, seating area and a pool though cN use the main hotel pool area too. Compared to other places in Dubai scenery isn't too great. Ice rink downstairs as well as a mini market with some Tesco branded items. Pharmacy, beauty salon, phone services, tourist shop and a few different restaurants witnin the building (25% discount for Galleria residents).. A big plus point as do not have to go out. Gym and spas within the building too. Gym included in the price package. Aerobics classes additional charge though has 25% discount also. There is a club and a cinema showing mainly indian films within the building too. Small garden area and large tennis courts outside.
Car parking available. Can get stuck in heavy traffic, especially when exiting. Always see and hear a plane up in the air whatever time of the day or night, though isnt too noisy.
Price is cheaper than other hotel apartments but near enough the same as villa rent (exc bills). Have to install own internet and TV packages. If you have your own furniture and household items villa may be ideal though would have additional bills to pay.
Staff are very friendly an trusting.

Room Tip: If long term, end of the corridor is ideal as no elevator noise.

Its linked to the 5 star Hyatt Regency Dubai, and use of its facility.
Good points its near a metro station (closed most of Friday opens late afternoon).
The misses had a free coffee at the lobby whilst using the free wifi and she said its the best coffee she had.
We visited it many times just for the coffee I had soft drink.
Kitchen was good apart from fridge door and shelf all other mod cons
Its got ice rink and wifi is good in lobby area. Staff was very helpful.
There is a pool bar with sport TV but didn't buy anything.
There even a small supermarket that stocks Tesco stuff.
As for the rest its old and very dated the apartment looks something from 70s
Pool which is part of the 5 star hotel was poorly maintained walls and paint was poor I wouldn't allow young children to use it was could easily injured themselves.
TV had plenty channels but it was snowing.
Washer/drier to be honest it didn't dry anything.

The Galleria Residence is the Family and long term rental part of the Hyatt Regency Dubai Hotel. The location is convenient and the residence provides a free car parking for its residents. There is an Ice Rink, a supermarket and a cafe inside the residence.

Well, what a disaster. This accommodation was booked by my company for a 3 week business trip to Dubai, and they couldn't have picked a worst place.

The main thing: this place is dirty. One finger of dust and dirt around the skirting boards, and not just behind the nightstands. The first apartment we were given, we stayed in it for one week and a half in there - until we saw cockroaches roaming from one bathroom to a bedroom. Once reported to the person at the reception, a gentleman wearing the traditional attire (dishdasha) who couldn't care less whatever you would tell him, we were offered to "send someone the day after to lay some gel" - he couldn't even offer us to change apartments, so we had to explicitly request it to a manager - who gave us a room that had a terrible smell of dump. Third attempt, the smell wasn't so bad - no cockroaches in sight - but still shared the same amount of dirt and suspicious red stains on the same decrepit carpet.

the smell factor is enhanced by the fact that some guests smoke in their apartment and the cigarette stink gets to the corridor and in others' apartment.

Facilities like the pool on the rooftop and the reduced laundry prices apply only to "long-staying guests" - one month minimum. Expect a fat bill if you choose to use the laundry service as the prices applied are possibly the same as the 5* Hyatt Regency main hotel.

Location-wise is far from ideal - it's in the north side of Dubai (Deira) close to the Gold and Spice souks, but that's pretty much it - it's far from Marina / media city, and the traffic in miserable due to the reduced amount of lanes in Deira, the old town. A metro station is close enough but it's far from recommended to use the metro in summer. Taxis tend to be scarce during the weekend as they probably gather elsewhere where there's more buzz. Final "gift" is the nearby fish market which creates a disgusting combination of smells with the heavy traffic smog.

The only positive sides are the access to the pretty decent gym in the Regency, the minimarket near the ice rink and the superb japanese restaurant ("Miyako") but unfortunately these are just tiny minor things compared to the massive faults in cleanliness and customer service that plague the Hyatt Galleria.
