St. Michael, Barbados

Gran Hotel, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 9 May 2013
The Gran Hotel in the centre of the city is ideally located for easy access to the main plaza, about 21/2 blocks away. There was an atrium where breakfast was served . The coffee was excellent as well as the local fruit, juices and other dishes. The rooms were very spacious with a big king size bed and all the amenities. Complimentary drinks were provided in the small refrigerator. The bath included a tub.The rooms did not carry irons or ironing boards so if any clothes had to be ironed this was the job of a hotel maid for a fee.I had good access from the wi-fi in the hotel room, but the hotel could do with a sprucing up in the carpeting on the stairs, some of the interior walls and in the efficiency of the elevator. On the whole it was a quiet 5th floor.Unfortunately not much English is spoken by the employees.

Stayed here when the American Airlines flight broke down and they paid for the hotel. Now it could be that they were just not used to the number of people checking in and had not checked all the rooms but our room was a dump! I probably should have gone back to reception and demanded another room but after being stuck for 12 hours in La Paz airport all I wanted was to go to sleep!
The only thing on the plus side was that it was big and spacious. When I turned on the taps brown rusty water came out which didn't seem to go away! Also the shower didn't work as no hot water came out. Not that I felt like having a shower as the cold water was brown and rusty like the basin taps!
The wall in the bedroom had a large chunk peeling paint in one corner and I suspect it wasn't a room they would normally hand out.
The hotel looks well past it's sell by date and they obviously don't spend any money on its up keep. I would be surprised if there were not far better options in town!

Room tip: Check shower works and water is good before accepting room!

Everything is so wrong with this property that I don't know where to start. I can remember few hotels where I've felt so helpless. I encourage everyone not to stay here. It's extremely expensive for what you get. I was staying for 3 nights but after the 1st one I left immedately and checked in Cortez Hotel, also in the center, 20% cheaper and much much better!

Room tip: There is no best room! All rooms are in hell!

Every town in Latin America has a 'Gran' Hotel. I look for them. They are located in the center of downtowns, are built big and first-class, and are invariably a generation out-of-date. Gran Hotel Santa Cruz is a prime example. (plaque in lobby: 'since 1952') This one has a nice, big atrium restaurant and does a trade in meetings. Pool area is a nice little oasis and the gym is more than adequate for most things. The Gran even has staff that appear to have been there for decades. Location is a couple blocks from the principal plaza and near everything. A new boutique hotel has opened on the plaza, but otherwise the Gran is the best choice in center of this town. Rooms are enormous with large all tile bath with tub. Only one small window though in room 610. It appeared there are several room types and possibly an annex near the pool. Hallways are dark and underlit, although area near elevators are spacious. Wifi reception spotty at times and TV channel selection not extensive. A very unfortunate painting of questionable taste hangs behind the front desk in lobby.

This hotel has seen better days, and might need some attention. Some colleagues has problems with showers in the morning, such as not having hot water or not having water at all. Staff was so-so.

As previous reviews have noted, a major decorative overhaul is looong overdue at this 70s relic. However if you want a large clean room with a good bed and decent bedding, good bathroom, wifi, TV and minibar, attentive friendly service and a central location, it's fine.

The pool is large and deep, and although the water is mysteriously opaque, it's lovely to swim in. Try to get a room with a view over the pool - you get a view across the city which isn't bad.

Breakfast has a wide selection of stuff and they'll make you eggs to your preference. Coffee is dire but I've yet to have a good one at a hotel so far in this city.

We negotiated a hefty discount off the rack rate, and at the price we paid, despite the swirly floral carpets and cracked plasterwork, we were happy.
