We had initially booked at another hotel, but on arriving were told that reservations had messed up and there were no rooms available. So the manager has booked us into Dara Reang Sey. Dara was much farther than the city centre, however our woes had just started. The rooms we were given had no curtains, the 'blanket' was a towel, drainage water was spouting out through the bathtub, the rooms and towels reeked of smoke, and the breakfast was paltry and rotten. My friend got sick eating the breakfast and could eat nothing for the next 2 days. All in all, a terrible experience. The mosquitoes in our rooms seemed to like their stay though!

When I first came here, the look of the place seems nice, even through the lobby. Yet, as night passed by, I could finally see what's so bad about the place. First, was the unfriendly and unsmiling employees. Even if you greet them with a smile, they would greet you with a frown. Unhelpful, as well. During the nights, sometimes the electricity would suddenly be cut-off (Happens twice already) and some lights at the lobby are unavailable that they did not bother to change. The only good things about the place would be the prices and the location as it is near to some shops, markets and pub street

My girlfriend and I had reserved a room at Dara Rean Sey for 7 nights; we spent one night there before moving to another establishment. Here's why:

1) Location: What we were unaware of before arriving was how far the hotel is located from the centre of Siem Reap; it's a good 5-10 minute tuk tuk drive from the town along a dusty main road, rendering any designs of strolling into town unpalatable. There is also practically nothing whatsoever by way of amenities such as shops or restaurants in the hotel's surrounding area.

2) Staff: Upon our arrival, the staff seemed utterly baffled when we presented our reservation details, and took a long time to go through all the paper-work and present us with our keys. This was not helped by the fact that their English was very limited; in all fairness to them, perhaps westerners are not their ordinary clientele. Indeed, they often looked at us as if wondering what we were even doing there, which was not a particularly welcoming feeling.

3) Other factors: Beyond the relatively impressive lobby, the whole hotel looks as though it's barely seen a lick of paint in the last 30 years. Our air conditioning unit (a necessity in Cambodian August) barely worked, and our bathroom featured a bin which hadn't been properly cleaned out and a shower curtain covered in mildew. The wifi barely reached the rooms, and was either slow or cut out regularly. The restaurant was also poor, and the breakfast buffet even worse.

I honestly could not recommend Dara Reang Sey as a place to stay; sure it's reasonably cheap, but for an extra three dollars a night you can do so much better in Siem Reap.

best value for money.
good location, service, the room is not too dirty.
you'll hear the faint sound of motorcycles, trucks almost all night. but it is Asia. in any ordinary hotel, and even at 5 star hotel will be. Asians simply do not care.
but in the morning you get a cup of fantastic coffee from cafe located opposite. there you will be given a decent breakfast, where you will sit and watch the wake of the open doors to the morning Cambodia.

Stayed here for a week for a conference. Conference attendees were from poor areas and worked in children's education centres. I was with a team of six Australians who were there to help them. The staff at this hotel treated us almost like we were unwelcome guests. There was no respect shown and customer service was minimal. They ran out of coffee, milk and sugar at every break. One litre of milk was apparently supposed to cater for 100 cups of coffee. The conference area was not cleaned during our time there. The manager of Dara Reang Sey hotel in PP had arranged a discount for us but this was not honoured. The food in the dining room was ok but not really up to standard and by the third day was becoming less plentiful. Anyone who didn't come in at the beginning of the lunch hour had to gather plates of food from other tables or go hungry. The hotel was hot with no aircon in hallways. Aircon in the rooms was turned off when you left the room. The shower curtain in the bathroom was moldy and very offputting. The bar fridge didn't work properly. I wouldn't bother staying here again and our next conference is likely to be in a different city. The reception area was so hot it was impossible to sit there in comfort or to use the internet computer.

Room Tip: Beds are rock hard. The service phone outside my room rang at all hours of the day and night. Aircon was very good though. I was on second floor. Lifts work well and the stairs are easy to climb.
