If you look for a long wide beach where you are actually allowed to swim and you can even find a spot of privacy then Sanya Bay is the place. Might be a bit low key but drive all the way down towards the Airport area and you have great private swimming

Sanya is a holiday place for Chinese and also quite a few Russians. Very hard to find anyone speaking English and their ATMs don't accept mastercard. We had huge difficulties because we arrived assuming we could get local currency from an ATM at the airport....wrong. Eventually got a taxi to our hotel assuming we could exchange currency at the hotel....wrong. Paid taxi in HKD and managed to borrow some CNY from the hotel so we could take a taxi in to the city centre to find a bank. Found many banks, none of which would accept our cards. Finally came across ICBC and hit the jackpot! There is nothing to see in Sanya so it is a waste of time unless you just want to lie on the beach all day. The whole place seems fake...no atmosphere at all except maybe in the city itself. The resort areas are bland and none of the hotels get much of a rating for service or food.

The beach reminds me so much of Waikiki beach. It's on the edge of the city and like Waikiki it is normally very busy. The water isn't as clear though but the views are nice. You can get a nice view of Phoenix Island in the distance along with all the ships and tankers anchored in the bay. You'll also have a view of all the planes coming in to land and take-off.
There are lots of Palm trees for shelter, a few seats and a nice walk next to a very busy road. There's also the usual Jet skis zipping up and down close to shore.
There are a few shops close by in case you're hungry or thirsty. Worth a visit even just to relax.

For being named after the city itself, very underwhelming walking down the promenade. Airplanes constantly flying over due to the airport being located at the North end of the bay. This bay out of all the other bays should represent the city in a proper way which it currently fails to do.
